Jamie's Story

Last summer I had lunch with four classmate from GHS Class of 1972 in Peoria and volunteered to coordinate a 40th class reunion for our group of 722 people. Wow! It's keeping me busy so THAT'S what I've been up to lately! At the lunch were Martha Barstow, Laurie Evans Pearson, Sally Hull Glover and Nancy Tate. We had a nice visit and since then I've met with a scad of other classmates, both on line and in person to put together what hopes to be a really memorable weekend. We reserved July 6, 7 and 8th since that's when those gals wanted--and that's their birthday weekend. This past year I made a resolution to not be involved in any more projects which do not have a definite end and to ween myself out of those to which I was already committed. The reunion planning committee fits right into that personal goal. Until very recently I have been facilitating a group of families who have people with Alzheimer's Disease and facilitating a group for people who have had weight loss surgery. I have personal history with both of those. I've also been training the Alzheimer's Support Group leaders in 22 Illinois Counties as well as providing training and support for those who are employed by the local association itself. My volunteer work includes singing at the local nursing homes where I have songs from the 30's and 40's that we all enjoy. In the 40 years since high school I have re-established friendships with my sisters, Janet, Jennifer, and Julie and built a relationship with my significant other--Hester McCosh. This comes with having been, as they say, "a friend of Bill W." for some 30 years. For those who don't know that means I've been clean and sober for quite some time and it's a huge part of my life. I have one son, Drew, who draws. Actually he's an artist who specializes in puppets. He has made me proud as he has traveled with his work all over the world. He does a lot for the festival in N.O. that I can't spell and the Chicago and New Orleans communities. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago on a full scholarship and is going to be 33 in a couple of weeks. I went to college a lot and ended up with a wall full of degrees. licenses and certificates. I had a whole lot of jobs and my favorite was teaching at high school and community college level. I also travel and do seminars and workshops at conferences--most of them in the health care world. I've been the keynote speaker twice and told my story--ON THE OTHER SIDE which is about being a nursing home administrator one day and moving in as a resident the next. My biggest accomplishments are staying clean and sober and losing 280 pounds. Of course, I had to be a drunken fat fool in order to have those in my list so it's not that big of a deal in some ways. Walking and breathing and being able to make and keep friends is the big accomplishment for me. I'm sure I'll think of other things to note late. Right now I need to walk the dogs. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Jamie Below is the Story I posted on MY STORY on the GHS Class ...Expand for more
of 1972 40th Reunion Planning Wall on Facebook: MY STORY: In today's culture, at an outdoor music festival, carrying a yellow helium balloon identifies you to others like yourself that you are in a 12 step recovery program. I was thinking about that today. I am learning so much about so many of you and I want to know more. I might make myself a t-shirt to wear to the pick-nick identifying all of my current life areas/groups. It would identify me to others in our group. I've already met two people in the planning who have spouses with Alzheimer's and a handful of others with parents suffering the disease. I've had a number of classmates come out to me as lesbian/gay. I know of about three others who are in 12 step recovery programs and with the way we lived in high school I'm betting there are a few others who might not have "been just going through a phase?" I've been involved for most of our adult lives and clean and sober over 25 years. I've met another classmate who's had weight loss surgery and maintained a weight loss in this group. (I've lost 280 pounds and no longer use oxygen or a wheel chair.) I am finding people who I share a lot of common political and spiritual beliefs. My life today also consists of writing (life stories for older folks and their families), drawing and working out at the gym. I stayed involved in Girl Scouts for almost 30 years--the last few as a professional (paid staff) as a camp nurse in the St. Louis area camps. I've lived all over the USA including on a commune in Southern Tennessee (The Farm) and worked in more than one career field, but most of them in the helping professions. My significant other and I enjoy a nice leisurely life which includes traveling to visit family and friends (which I always say is the last trip--and we always have another one.) We have two cats and two dogs. One of the dogs is her "baby" and the other is just a dog. They are chihuahuas. She is retired from Cat here in Peoria and I'm retired from lots of things--mostly nursing home administration. I do still do some workshops and trainings. I recently trained support group leaders in 22 counties for the Alzheimer's Association using a workbook I wrote while earning my MS Ed called "Who Me? Lead a Group?" I do a lot of volunteer work for them and for the local nursing homes. My one son, Drew, lives in Chicago in the summer and New Orleans in the winter (in fact, he's on the road heading south right now.) He's a world traveled artist who is compared to John Watters (whatever his name is--that Pink Flamingo guy) and does work that I don't understand at all but my partner is nice enough to let us have some in the house despite its extreme oddity. I am looking forward to this upcoming class reunion weekend. I am excited to see people in person who I vaguely knew in high school or not at all and have kindled and rekindled friendships with here. I want to see people having fun and am happy to be a part of the planning and organizing for that outcome. That's MY story. What's YOURS?
