Jamie's Story
College
Marquette University was a tremendous learning experience for me. In the beginning I did not want to be there and was not prepared for the experience, socially or academically. Personal demons were raging at first and I was invited to leave Marquette after two years. After getting clean and sober I decided to return to Marquette to finish what I had began. I had a new attitude and was motivated to succeed. Being a non-traditional student made me feel stupid at times but in the end I had no one to blame but myself. Seriously, what can you talk about with an eighteen year old? I developed relationships with a few faculty members, most of whom I am still in contact with today, but I have very little contact with any student from Marquette save for Liz Torres (Baron). I worked as a writing tutor at the Ott Memorial writing center for cash and was a full-time student until I graduated. I triple-majored in Secondary Education, Teaching major in English, and a Teaching major in Philosophy. I did my student teaching experience at Bay View H.S. I desperately requested South Division H.S. but this fellow student beat me to the sign-up line and chose South by DEFAULT, meaning she just pointed and picked randomly. me. I was accepted to the Language, literacy, & Culture program for a Master's degree at the University of California at Berkeley and was all ready to go but my mom got sick and I decided to care for her. I do plan to go on with my education, but for now my family comes first because I love my mother.
Workplace
I am the coordinator/office manager of a tribal study center that services tribally enrolled students in the Wisconsin Dells area. A study center is a facility that is maintained by the Ho-Chunk Nation and is a safe environment for students to come and socialize and receive tutorial help in completing academic assignments. I have three teachers, three tutor/drivers, and one administrative secretary under my supervision. There are also two Home School Coordinators who service the Dells and Baraboo areas through direct contact with the school districts and home visits when necessary. These two coordinators are my professional peers and we three share the same supervisor. Prior to this position I was a teacher at this study center for the past two years. I was promoted to the coordinator position in August of this year. I enjoy my job and look forward to it everyday. Honestly, with the excellent staff that services this center anyone could have my job and be good at it. I just happen to be here such that I am.
