Jamie's Story
Life
I have lived in Arlington since 1986. I have 4 cats, 2 dogs and an African Grey parrot, all rescues. I have been playing various sports all my life, but in 2001, at 38 years old, I tried out for the National Women's Football League, for the DC Diva's. It is undoubtly the most fun thing I have ever done. I retired after the 2004 season, and now I spend my free time volunteering for the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. I own a printing company in Arlington. Check it out at double you double you double you dot jamie nicholas dot com.
School
I never did apply myself much as far as school work went. I got good grades, but never took classes that really tasked me. I was too busy playing sports. Softball and Field Hockey took up all my time, and any pick up sport that I got wind of. I was bussed to Chantilly for half a day my Sophomore and Junior year. I guess it paid off, as I now own a printing company.
College
I never went to college, although I was recruited for hockey at U. MD, and Indiana for hockey and softball. I look back now and think I would have had great fun, but I ended up with my own business, and didn't have to go into debt for a college education.
Workplace
While I was in school, I worked at Taylor Rental right in downtown Herndon....Expand for more
That was a trip. Worked with a couple of "good 'ole boys." One guys name was Maynard, and he had a beard down to his belly. My job there was to write up tickets for rented equipment. Everything had to be tested before it went out. The guys told me to get one of them to start any of the items before giving it to the customer. I had a guy waiting to rent a tamper, and I couldn't get any of them to come help me, so I took it upon myself to start the thing up and make sure it worked. If you don't know what a tamper is, it's a hydraulic piston with a "foot" on the bottom to tamp the ground down. Well, since no one would help me, I started it myself, and hit the gas to make sure it worked. It did. I tamped the floor of the store pretty good before all the guys came running out to "help" me. By then I had cut it off and handed the guy his paperwork. Not the greatest job, but it was fun for the summer.
After that, I worked in the printing industry. Never got away from it, as much as I tried. ; ) It's been pretty good to me, so I can't complain too much. I have done everything from bindery, press operation, sales, customer service and digital pre-press. I owned a shop for 9 years with a business partner, but went out on my own Jan 1st '06 as a printing broker.
