Jan's Story
This photo was taken two years ago when our snowfall exceeded 18 feet. That's not a hill the dog is standing on; it's the snowbank, almost 8 feet high, clearly over my head. The road dead ends over the hill behind me, and beyond there, the North Maine Woods stretches to Canada. Life here in the northernmost section of Maine is quiet, beautiful and wild. The dogs are German Shorthaired Pointers, which we used to breed and field trial. Now we just rescue them. Other photos in the photo section show back yard, front yard, neighbors and snow. Living here is like living in a poem.

erate a tractor, and can even still manage to throw a few bakes of hay when cutting seasn comes on hard and short. It's wild and isolated here. Once every couple weeks, the bear pulls the compost bin apart, and Charlie, our semi-tame raven comes for breakfast when we call him. We support other small diverse farms, buying free range eggs, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork, beef from our friends who have the same vision of local food at reasonable prices. Each fall we put up more canned and frozen veggies than I can count and six-plus cords of wood for supplemental heat. During winter I teach at a nearby college. I also write: first novel done (please let it sell) and second in the works. I'm also doing a PhD program, and of course, there are the grandkids!!!
