Jan's Story
12/26/12
Lived in Rice Lake until August 1966 when we moved to the Cities. Even tho' I didn't graduate from Rice Lake I feel that is my alma mater since I grew up with all of my classmates there.
I retired May 29, 2012 after having worked doing Payroll for the City of Bloomington for 34 years. I got to participate in some very unique and interesting things working there including working for the police dept at the Republican National Convention.. I also worked the Super Bowl in 1992. The theme of the whole weekend was to make people forget its cold here in MN. So guess what? We had a horrible blizzard that weekend. I worked every election from 1978 thru 2012 as either an election judge or an election processor.
My brother Jim and I graduated from Edina High School. From there I went to Normandale Community College where I was in their first freshman class, then to the U of W in River Falls with Marilyn Ekern (Brenna now). Maureen went to Stout and we visited each other as often as we could. What fun we had there!!
My family moved to Milwaukee in 1972 and I decided to go with them. I took a nursing assistant class there then got a job at Waukesha Memorial Hospital in their combined Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit. My job was monitoring all the patien...Expand for more
ts on heart monitors and doing EKG's and assisting with codes. I learned a lot at that job including the suffering some people have to endure.
From there I moved to Houston, TX for 2 years. I was the office manager at Union Standard Insurance there. I'll tell you about it if you ask me next time we see each other but those people there sure are colorful to say the least.
I left Houston two years later and returned to the Cities. I shared an apartment with Maureen Ekern (Mantor now) in Stillwater and Little Canada while working at Machine Tool Supply then I moved to Bloomington after I got that job.
Currently I live in Burnsville, MN. I have about 20 nieces and nephews not counting their spouses and I have 15 great nieces and nephews - 2 of them born this year.
Since I am retired now, I am able to spend time each month to relieve my dad of his household & personal care duties for my mother. My mother (93) had some strokes a week after her 90th birthday and is disabled now. They retired to Rice Lake in 1991 during the Halloween blizzard. They still live in their home (my dad is 95). My dad is her sole caretaker and housekeeper. When I'm there I take over for him so he gets a break.
I hope all of you are well and enjoying retirement or are about to retire soon.
