Jane's Story
Life
In 1988 I moved to Harrisonburg VA with my three daughters. I began as a full-time student in 1989 at Eastern Mennonite College and received a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing in 1992. In 1993 I began my nursing career as a Staff RN at Rockingham Memorial Hospital on the Orthopedics floor as well as in the float pool working on all the different floors.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 1998 and after a mastectomy and radiation I'm still alive and kicking!
I took a year and a half away from RMH to work as an RN at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville VA in March 2001, but then returned to RMH in January 2003.
In April 2006 I resigned as an RN at RMH to work at various pursuits which had been on hold for many years & which I did not want to wait until retirement to tackle.
My three daughters all live on their own: Emily (32) sold her house in Annapolis MD and bought a condo in Clarendon. She also changed jobs and now works as the Technical Manager for the National Association of Home Builders in DC. She recently sold her condo and now lives in Springfield, VA with her friend Dave; Mary Anne (30) has made great strides since her automobile accident in February of 2000. She was on a ventilator for 11 days and continues to undergo periodic revisionary surgeries to correct the severe facial trauma she suffered. Most recently she was the administrative assistant for a consulting engineering firm in Chesapeake which does failure analysis. She is getting ready to sell her house in Hampton & has just moved with her 9 month...Expand for more
old baby girl (yes, I'm a grandmother!) into a house she bought in Bridgewater, VA; Margaret (28) has just moved back to Harrisonburg, VA.
My husband, John, was Chief Technical Writer at SI International here in Harrisonburg. The company he worked for is based in Reston on Sunset Hills Road which I find amazing because my school bus travelled along Sunset Hills Road on the way to HHS. In those days it was a pretty little country road. What a different world it is now!
He was diagnosed in April 2008 with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is a progressive and fatal disease with death occurring on average within two to four years of diagnosis. His was bulbar onset as are 25% of ALS cases with symptoms first affecting speech and swallowing. The disease progressed rapidly and he took his own life on October 26, 2008 unable to face life in a wheelchair completely dependent on others thus robbing them of their independence. He was a true hero throughout his illness.
He was an avid hiker and was the trail overseer for the One Mile Run trail in Shenandoah National park. That was the most difficult part of his life to abandon; he loved camping and hiking. He also ran four marathons in his lifetime.
I play Appalachian Old Time music as well as traditional Irish music on fiddle at jams and sessions with friends in the Charlottesville-Nelson County area. I'm on the left in the front row of the group photo in my album. I am learning to play a B/C button accordion and also enjoy studying German.
