Jane's Story

I'm fascinated by the various tracks that our classmates have taken ¿ their travels, chosen vocations/careers, where they now live, and mostly how the way life in the mid-sixties formed careers and lives for so many classmates. People that you never suspected would go onto college have earned advanced degrees and here¿s my story: Still trying to figure out what to say about 45 years in less than 200 words but am known to be verbose. I'm not one of the retirees. We have a 10 yr old girl & a 15 yr old boy at home that have been with us since infancy, first as foster children and now adopted. In our first (blended) family my son is 40, the step-children are 39 (New York), 40 (Ireland), & the oldest would have been 43 but lost to cancer in 2004. Been with Tom since '76 when I moved back to San Diego after years in San Francisco. After graduating from Mesa in Social Sciences, I went on to SDSU majoring in party, then to SF State majoring in protest & the summer of love. I ended up a divorced middle class mom working for the post office. I moved back to San Diego in 1976 to a job cleaning sportfishing boats where I met Tom. We just celebrated our 33rd anniversary. He had Shelter Island Refrigeration, a business that specialized in sportfishing and tuna boats, keeping beer cold and fish frozen. The business also helped build yachts so we traveled to any place there was a boat yard or dock. That business was closed when we moved to Arizona. Life was a good ride in San Diego where we lived in Clairemont ¿ we did a lot of stuff ¿ jetskis, off-road race team(Baja 1000 style), travel to Mexico, legal secretary, Kelly Girl, and raise 4 kids. After those 4 were on their own, we wanted out of the city. So in 1991 we moved to Snowflake, Arizona (the true story is Mr. Snow met Mr. Flake on the road and changed the name from Stinson Ranch to Snowflake ¿ there is even a larger than life statue on Main Street) A small mountain town where life has been good - ranch life, skiiing, hunting for 1000 yr old pottery and arrowheads, cowboy golf, theater arts (my favorite avocation), building an adobe house from piles of dirt, 12 years as a CASA volunteer, then CASA staff, and most recently as a social worker. Went back to JC here - graduated with honors and national deans¿ list in medical transcription in 2003. What a change from the first time through school. We raise grass-fed (no hormones) beef and lamb for sale and will FedEx it frozen anywhere. Don't understand retirement - too much to do, too much fun doing it. We also have cottage industries of tooled leather Christmas ornaments and copper bell windchimes. (If anyone is interested just contact me - the grumpygrannygarden. Of course that¿s me ¿ couldn¿t let my attitude go unnoticed much less try to overcome my ADD and focus on one thing.) More questions? Just ask, I¿ll answer. y key board to Spanish. 3/26/2010 Jay just had his 16th birthday - wow, time flies with or with out having fun. He has now been part of our lives for almost half our married years. The grandkids are now 19, 5, & 2. The 19 yr old will not call these two uncle or aunt - just not right for her. another year with good health but increased limping from injures in a 1992 rollover & flipover of his perfectly good pickup 4x4 PU truck. Good thing I was alone. About time to get the hip replacement replaced but dread the down time when I should be gardening. Summer comes and goes by rapidly. Little Theater is mounting a production of Beauty & The Beast. I ended up with Cogsworth to costume & build props for. Been learning American Sign Language the deaf 6-yr-old foster child that was placed with us in February. That's been a challenge for the household. The Irish granddaughters did not get to visit the states this summer as planned - visa problems. The coews still haven't claved - looks like they will explode is they don't calve soon. And if they don't calve soon, they'll just have to go to auction in September - just not practical feeding 1500lb pets. Horses are bad enough. Been fun writing to classmates and catching up. This years reunion has fallen away to new tires for my pickup - can't get through winter with yucky tires. And that hip replacement that I've coped with for 15 years is really starting to wear out - really time to get it fixed - don't want to sit on the beach at CanCun with crutches. Have fun. September 5, 2011 Back working at school as a special ed paraprofessional, second family kids (12, & 17) are back in school now on the 3rd week. Tom gave the family a surprise on Thursday - brought home 2 calves, trying to think of good names since they are for DINNER - already used Stew, Porter, Ham(burger), T-Bone, Chuck when we're only raising 1 or 2. More than 2 get numbers & market (slaughter) spots. Think we're down to Brisket, New York, DelMonico, & Fillet, they sure are pretty heifers. Tom now wants to raise a hog - name "Will B. Bacon" or Honeybaked. By naming them market cuts, we are always reminded not to get too close. Summer has been good for the rains and green pastures. June 26, 2012 Half-year update - have a different position at the JH this year - Health Tech (guess all that training, EMT courses, & riding the ambulance is finally making an impact on a very late career) Kids are wonderful - grown ones are too old to be mine, second family is maturing rapidly Jay is 18 and Maxi almost 13. Time has flown. Again have foster babies placed with us - another JJ (Jerry Jay) aged 2. Really kinda fun having little kid's laughter in the house again after a break. Just recognized we've been on this ranch 21 years a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes miss the smell of salt air, still miss old friends but so many have moved on or away that it makes sense to keep in touch electronically but don't miss sirens, traffic jams (like when elk herd blocks the road), or hi-rises. Waiting for the first monsoon rain of the summer, sky is clouded over.
