Jane's Story
I am starting 25 years as a speech teacher and debate coach and twenty years of that at Grapevine High School in Texas. I got my Bachelors at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1984. In 2006, I graduated from Tarleton State University with a Masters of Education in Administration with a 4.0 GPA.
I have had a good and adventureous life. I have traveled quite a bit in the US and am still very close to my family, who mostly live near my parents.
While teaching for four years at Arkansas High School, I coached 3 state champions in Interpretation acting events and had a Speaker of the House in the State student congress. I taught speech, theatre, and debate along with "family planning" while at AHS.
In my 20 years as coach at GHS, I cultivated a TOC top speaker, seven TFA state champions, 2 State UIL champions, and coached 50+ students to the NFL National Championship with 10 of those students finishing in the top 10 - Including a 3rd place in Lincoln Douglas Debate, 4th place speaker in Cross-examination debate, 8th place student congress and the first coach in National Forensic League history to have 3 Lincoln Douglas Debaters from the same school in the elimination rounds in the same year. In addition to coaching Lincoln Douglas Debate, Extemporaneous Speakin...Expand for more
g, Public Forum Debate, and Student Congress, I am a dedicated Communication Applications teacher at Grapevine High School.
I have been honored with several coaching and teaching awards including: The Barkley Forum Key Coach Society, National Forensic League Triple Diamond, the UIL Denis Award, and the National New District Chair Award for the National Forensic League. Who's Who of American teachers 5 times, and Region 11 teacher of the year twice.
I served as a debate judge and clinician who judged the final rounds at NFL Nationals in LD, CX debate, US extemp, as well as a finals panel member at the TOC in LD for 5 years consecutively. I directed debate summer institutes at Northwestern University, Catholic University, the University of Texas.
I served in several national leadership roles including Vice President of the National Coaches, Association, NFL District Chairperson and committee, the official Co-host of the 2006 National Forensic League National Tournament, and the selection committee for the National Student of the Year for the NFL.
I only have 6 more years before I can retire from teaching in Texas and God literally only knows the other adventures I have after that.
I do hope to build a house on the family acreage near Bentonville and retire there.
