Jane's Story

Life After leaving school (end of 11th grade) to get married, my husband and I lived in Imlay City for 2 more years. We moved to Almont and lived there for 2 years. By then our daughter was 4 and we were expecting our son and needed more room than what we had in our trailer. We moved to Emmett and lived on a farm for 3 years (I-69 now runs thru the farm property.) From there we moved to Chippewa Lake. My husband was a maintanence man for a bank and I was the janitor. We lived there for 1 year and moved back downstate to Croswell. I acquired my high school diploma in 1980 thru Croswell-Lexington Adult Education (better late than never). My husband hired in at an automotive plant and I was a stay at home mom until our children were 14 and 10. I then hired in at the same automotive factory where my husband worked. He worked there for 30 yrs (going from Utility person to plant superintendent) and I worked there for 21 yrs starting as an assembler, going into shipping & receiving, and finished the last 18 years there as a material buyer. When a $500 million dollar company bought the plant, the environment of the company changed and after 3 years of trying to assimilate into the new environment, we both decided it was time to explore new job opportunities. My husband hired in with another automotive plant as plant manager (a position that had eluded him in the past 20 years) and I found work in a trucking company working in accounting. I have since left the trucking company, but my husband is doing well in his position as plant manager he has had for the past 2 years. We have been married for 38 years (who says teenage marriages don't last?), make a comfortable living, have a nice home in the woods near Lake Huron, have 2 great kids, and 3 wonderful grand...Expand for more
kids. Life has not always been easy, especially in the early years, but we have worked hard to get where we are and I don't have any regrets. My dad passed away 14 years ago and I miss him dearly. My mother is now 82 yrs old, lives in Mecosta County by herself. She was wintering in Florida by herself after Dad died and did so up until last winter. This is her first winter home in over 20 years. She has macular degeneration and is legally blind but has recently taken up bowling again and bowled 150 and was featured in the Big Rapids Pioneer newspaper for her accomplishment ! She is currently spending her time transferring vcr tapes to dvd discs. All the family history! She is getting to be an electronics whiz! My oldest sister Judy is married w/ 3 children, 7 grandchildren and living in Beloit, Wisconsin. She works in a regional hospital in Illinois, setting up phone systems for dr's and answering the hospital switchboard. Middle sister Janis currently lives in Kalamazoo with her 2 daughters. She is retired and unmarried. She has 3 grandchildren. She also has 2 older sons, the oldest is a policeman is Georgia and has worked on several different specialized task forces and the youner son lives in Kalamazoo and works as a Production manager for an automotive supplier. My younger brother Jack lives in Remus, Mi, near my mother. He is married and has 2 sons, and 2 grandchildren. He also works for an automotive supplier. Workplace I have done everything from cleaning horse stalls, putting up drywall, interior painting, exterior painting, wallpapering, upholstering, factory work, driving hi-lo, material buying for a $500k business, and accounting. I have also done some selling on Ebay. I am currently unemployed but I don't ever lack for anything to do.
