Janet's Story

Life After graduation I joined the US Navy and served three years. I was an SK3 and was stationed in Winter Harbor, Maine. After being released I moved to Charleston, SC with the sailor I met in Maine. We have been here since April 1978 and love it here-no snow! Chuck-my husband retired from the Navy in 1992 and served 30 years. Chuck now works for the State Employment Commission and is the supervisor of the Veterans Section. I worked for the govt at the Naval Supply Center and then the Charleston Naval Shipyard until it closed in 1996, and then worked for the US Army as a Logistics Management Specialist and was assigned to the command that handles the Army prepositioned ships- filled with armored, wheeled and track vehicles to support our troops. I retired with 27 years in 2005. We have one son...John who never missed a day of school from kindergarten to 12th grade. He is now 29, and he went to the College of Charleston and has a BS in Computer Science and now has a Masters and works for Space and Warfare Command. We live in Ladson, SC about 20 miles from the city, but have toured most places around town, and thoroughly enjoy this area. It does get mighty hot and humid-which it is now, but being here so long you get used to it. Currently I am involved in a local non-profit food bank, mostly supported by the local churches, schools, and grant monies received called Helping Hands of Goose Creek, yes that is Goose Creek---you may remember it being mentioned in a telephone commercial a few years ago (it is a real town, and watch our for the 'cops' since they hide around the corners, and get you for not having a working license plate light. As for Helping Hands I am the Board president and am diligently working on improving the operation and to improve the daily operation to assist the needy of this area. I am also a certified Lay Speaker at my church - Goose Creek United Methodist and fill in at the office when needed. We have a wonderful female pastor, and she has been with us for over 7 years. A small church with just over 340 members, but we enjoy the friendly atmosphere and embrace all...Expand for more
who visit. We have some great meals and activities, and last year celebrated our 40th anniversary and as chairperson I contacted many of the previous pastors, coordinated the event and it was a great success and two former pastors attended. One of the original members was presented a plaque for helping to start the church - Mrs. Serena McClain and she was overwhelmed with this honor. A great time was had by all and a fitting meal was enjoyed by many. The beaches here are great. Folly can be crowded, but it is still the beach. The ride to Edisto is beautiful and the beach is clean and not crowded. There are no fast food places, except for about 5-7 miles before coming in, but the pace is slow and many good seafood restaurants are there. The many historical places to visit make Charleston a haven for tourists and that is ok, but doing the touring in off season is much better- and remember the Civil War started right off the coast at Fort Sumter. Many plantations, old houses, a carriage tour downtown is a must, and great places to eat around the Market will be enjoyed. So if ever you are in the area please call (843) 572-1031 and I'll be glad to meet you'all so spend time showing off this lovely and holy city!! College I received an Associates Degree from Rice Business College in Accounting in 1980, and it took me a while, due to working, raising a good son, to pursue and complete the necessary course for a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Limestone College in 1996. Due to the Charleston Naval Shipyard closing I was able attend course for a change in careers, and the grant monies available for this change allowed me to attend evening courses - while still working and hoping to find another government position to continue my civil service career to reach retirement. I was hired by the US Army Combat Equipment Group-Afloat in April 1997 and used this current education to write statement of work with regard to contractor work performance to repair wheeled equipment, generators, tanks, HUMVEEs, large trucks, bulldozers, etc for the deployment of personnel in crisis areas.
