Janet's Story

Jan & Andy Stambaugh Our Story (as told by Jan) Andy and I met at Nathan Hale. We sat across the room from each other in Mrs. Elson's Honors English course during our senior year. That was fifty years ago. We were not high school sweethearts...far from it. As fate would have it, we both selected Washington University in St. Louis as our college pick. There we hung out together and fell in love. We married in the summer of 1968. I was 19. Andy was 20. We continued our studies and received our bachelors degrees in 1970. (Years later, we got our masters degrees in business administration. Andy also earned a masters degree in telecommunications management.) We both worked in the technology field for a couple of years, and we saved most of what we earned. When our bank account hit $2500, we convinced ourselves we had ample cash to travel. We had lived in St. Louis long enough to know that we did not want to spend our lives there. We quit our jobs, bought a tent, and set out to see the world. The first night, we camped in the Oklahoma Panhandle in Beaver County, Cow Chip Capital of the World. The wind was fierce. In the middle of the night, it lifted the tent-flaps and hurled our canvas hideaway to the ground, breaking both of our lanterns and sending us scurrying to the shelter of our automobile. I sat in the backseat and cried. (What were we thinking?) Nine months later, as we ended our excursion, I cried again, certain that the best days of my life were now over. We had traversed all of the states west of the Mississippi and most of the states to the east. We had slept with the bears, bathed in a bucket, and foraged for mushrooms and other wild edibles. We had explored places we had never been, and made friends with strangers. Among our treasures were a box of sand dollars, a large whale rib, a huge boulder, and a wild flower alphabet sampler that I had embroidered along the way. Since our college years, we have lived and worked in a variety of places including Denver-CO, Princeton-NJ, Portland-OR, Cupertino-CA, Monterey-CA, a...Expand for more
nd Geneva, Switzerland. I worked for Hewlett-Packard for twenty years, first as head of Corporate Marketing programs, and then in the Information Technology function. I retired in 2001 after completing a three-year Geneva-based assignment as CIO (Chief Information Officer) for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. During that time, we extensively explored the countries and gateways around us. We made many friends, friends who are still a part of our lives. We continue to enjoy our wonderful life together. Andy spent much of his career managing software development activities in various companies including Tektronix, FMC Corporation, Phillips, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Agilent Technologies. He retired from Agilent in 2002. When people ask if we have children, my usual response is no kids, no pets, no plants. Even fifty years ago, we thought the directive to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth had already been achieved. I have six siblings, all of whom have big families. I also have dozens of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, many of whom live in Oklahoma. Andy has a brother (Joe) who lives in Owasso, a sister, a niece, and a nephew. My mother passed away nine years ago. My father died in 2014 at the age of 96. In 2015, we decided to sell our home in Monterey and move to Owasso where both of Andys parents lived. We wanted to spend more time with them before they were gone. Mom and Dad were both 93 years old at that time, in great health, and excited to have us live nearby. We acquired our home in Dover Pond in January 2016. Sadly, Mom passed away six months later, before we completed our move. She was 94 and a half. We are still settling our Monterey affairs and moving our belongings into our lovely French manor. The task of relocation is more arduous than it was when we were younger. We try to spend as much time as we can with Dad and Joe. The reunion of Nathan Hale's class of '66 is a timely event for us and we're looking forward to renewing some old friendships. 8/18/2016 Jan Stambaugh aka Janet Ruth Pack
