Janet's Story
50 years since SPHS. Wow!
I took off for Aquinas College and taught French in Muskegon and later Lansing. After getting an MA at MSU, started working there in 1979. (One of you said I Was ambitious--well, I did get a PhD in University Administration in '84. The best compliment I ever received regarding my degree was from a dear coworker who said I didn't act like a PhD.--I was down-to-earth and not uppity) Met the man who would become my husband my first day on the job. Justin was a professor of American History. He was witty, intelligent, kind, and so much more. Unfortunately the month we were married (June '84) we learned he had prostate cancer and we lived with it until his death in 1995. He continued working up to the end. I was an academic specialist and worked on special projects for vice provosts most of the time I was there. If you have children (or grandkids) who have gone there since 1992, I worked on the Student Information System (for 9 years!) which they used to enroll and maintains all student records. I left MSU in 1999 after 20 years and moved to AZ in 2002.
While married we spent a lot of time with doctors and just daily living. Justin was ill on and off for 11 years...Expand for more
and always saw everything as a medical adventure. After his death, I got into Master Gardening and converted my little E Lansing lot to no grass and all perennials, ornamental grasses, and themed areas (like for butterflies). Oversaw remodeling jobs and got into travel. My number one destination of course was France. Been to UK and Ireland, and most interesting of all was China in 1999. I'd never go there now--the smog is awful; it was bad back then too. I've had some illness and now my big traveling days are over. In general my health is good and I can do most anything. I am not a hiker, in spite of the trails around here.
Please don't think of me as the egghead I was in school. I am down to earth, still have my sense of humor and live simply. I have a magnificent view of mountains from my deck and I have a close group of MI friends who moved here from the Lansing area. i just recently took up making jewelry and don't know why it took so long. It's really fun. Also still like to sing and hope to start taking lessons soon on jazz and blues.
That's about it. I'd love to hear from you. I'll keep checking Classmates.
Peace and happy new year,
Jan
