Janet's Story

Forgive the cliché, but where have the years gone? Seems like just yesterday we were fresh faced graduates walking across the stage at RLHS getting our diplomas, ready to set the world on fire. I like to think that, like fine wine, we only get better with time! Ken Olson and I married in 1972 and experienced the joys of living in poverty in married student housing at MSU. Things could only get better! I graduated with a BA in English with a teaching endorsement, and landed my first job in Choteau. Ken had earned his degree in finance and worked in Great Falls, commuting daily. Fortune smiled on us and we both found jobs in our respective fields in Helena, where we lived for the next 30 years. I taught 9th grade English at Helena Junior High and then went part-time in order to raise our family of two girls. When the girls were well into school I was hired as the public relations director for the school district. After serving in that position for two years I returned to full-time teaching at Helena High School. I taught English and Journalism and was also the advisor for the school newspaper. Ken worked for the State as ¿computer guru¿ for the Department of Labor and Industry. We both loved our jobs, but retirement beckoned us, and we turned in our time sheets three years ago. We had bought property on Swan Lake, about 8 miles from Bigfork, years earlier and decided that was where we wanted to live full time. We love the water and enjoy boating, cruising on our jet skiis, and just soaking in the sun and scenery meandering around the bay in the peddle boat. We¿re just an hour away from Glacier National Park and enjoy all...Expand for more
the opportunities for hiking, etc. Winters can get long, but we enjoy getting out on snowmobiles and skiing at Blacktail Mountain, a fun, family oriented ski hill. We keep busy singing in the church choir and serve on several boards. I do some subbing at Bigfork High School. After working in a school with the student population close to 1400, it¿s fun to be in a more relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy the kids¿all 200, plus or minus¿ and love the fact that I know them on a first name basis. I also like the fact that I can always say ¿No¿ to a job! We are blessed with two daughters. Our oldest daughter lives in Missoula and has also blessed us with three grandchildren; boys, ages 9 and 11, and a beautiful granddaughter, 15 months old. The other daughter is in Helena, single and working in retail. We relish being grandparents and keep the economy afloat travelling constantly to watch school programs, sports activities, etc. We love to travel, and our first trip abroad was to Greece. We spent three days in New York prior to flying to Athens, and loved Manhattan and all the cultural opportunities. We¿ve travelled extensively on the East Coast and also trek to Arizona yearly to visit family there. I keep busy with genealogy projects and dabble with writing. I¿ve written a young adult novel that has yet to find a publisher, but I enjoyed the process and coming up with a finished project. Even as I collect rejection slips I¿m thinking about future projects. Just wish the writing process went as quickly as ideas in my head fly past. I¿m hoping everyone is enjoying life as much as we are. I would love to hear from you!
