Janet's Story

Life I was born in Gatesville, TX. Moved to Orange, TX at the age of one year. Started school there at Jones Elem. then moved to Ft. Worth when I was halfway thru my third grade year. Lived in Wedgewood section of Ft. Worth and attended Bruce Shulkey Elem. third thru sixth grades. Attended Wedgewood Jr. High for seventh grade. Moved to Arlington right before I began eighth grade. Attended Nichols Jr. High. Hated it. Hated the kids (99% of them; I thought they were all a bunch of hoodlums and trash!) The girls were always fighting each other. I attended Arlington High my sophomore through graduation and rode the glorious bus #11 to and from school every day! Liked high school, but hated the principal, Mr. Webb. Very narrow minded individual in my opinion. Glad to see him leave! Enjoyed choir except didn't like Ms. Jane Ellis having her usual pets. Never got into Choraliers even tho' I thought I sang alot better than most of the popular kids who made the cut. Couldn't stand Ms. Moore for junior English. She failed me and the majority of her students that first semester. English had always been my BEST subject! She hallucinated in class (saw things that weren't there and heard things that weren't being said!). Vowed I would never allow my own children to be bullied by teachers or school administration and I've kept that vow. Graduated in 1971. Had a blast during graduation ceremony playing with water guns and blowing bubbles on stage at Texas Hall on the UTA campus. Started college at UTA and finished college at UT Austin. Those were the best times of my life. Learned to speak Spanish and fell in love with the various hispanic cultures, customs, and the language. Returned to Arlington and worked. Married and had two children. I got married to a divorced man and we had custody of his four children. We had two of our own. I ended up divorcing him after ten years of marriage. He got involved in the drug scene and I ...Expand for more
am zero tolerant of drugs. Divorced my first husband and moved to Gatesville with my kids to be safe from him. Began my career as a social worker/case manager. Loved the work and excelled in it. Coached coed soccer teams for the city's youth soccer league for six years. Coached both my son's and daughter's teams each year. I was also involved in 4-H as a club manager for 5 years. Met husband #2. Divorced him for a multitude of reasons! Not employed right now. Have to care for my elderly mother who has dementia. I still have a younger brother who lives in the southeast side of Arlington in a new subdivision there. He didn't graduate from an Arlington school, but from the high school here in Gatesville. I'll tell you, I wouldn't want to live in Arlington. Too much crime and too much traffic. I love the peace and quiet and safety of the country! School I began my educational career at Jones Elementary in Orange, TX. When I was in the middle of my third grade year, we moved to Wedgewood in Ft. Worth, Texas and I completed the third grade at Bruce Shulkey Elem. From there, I went to Wedgewood Junior High and completed the seventh grade. The summer of 1966, my family and I moved to Arlington and I began eighth grade at Nichols Junior High School in Arlington and then went on to graduate from Arlington High School. The fall of 1971, I began studying at the University of Texas at Arlington and then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 and graduated in December 1976 from the University of Texas. I love to blow off steam by playing with my dogs, taking walks with them. I no longer have a horse, so I don't go horseback riding any more. I miss it! I'd love to find out what happened to the teachers that graced our halls and classrooms during my high school years! Mrs. Dodgen for senior English. What a great teacher! Ms. Hickman for Spanish. Mrs. Holland for Spanish. Mrs. Greer for sophomore English.
