Janet's Story

I teach literature and writing at the university, in 2010 in Hangzhou, and for the past five years in China, with 3 years in Shanghai and 2, in Nanjing. I appear in a crowd scene in "Empire of the Sun", Stephen Spielberg, 1987. I have a paper in a book published by Fudan University Press, in 2010, on "The Master Builder", Henrick Ibsen as "Architect". I teach two courses in literature, and one in Writing. I am compiling a book authoring a book on a 19th century English woman who was a solo traveller through Asia, and North America, for the publisher in 2011. I am most proud of having been a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Central Asia and having served with the United Nations(Unicef) and Save the Children in the Caucasus, in monitoring trafficing of and abuse of women and children, mostly in war zones. I also am grateful for having been chosen for the "peace education" component in the republic of Georgia, to train teachers, and in Kosovo and Macedonia, by the EU, Bologna Peace Accord to conduct seminars in creative writing, and to work with young lawers' societies to defend human rights. As editor of Vol 70, no. 1, Royal Asiatic Society Journal, Shanghai(hdqtrs London), the journal was revived, having been shut down in 1949. ( As you remember I was editor of the THS Yearbook.) I write book reviews and travel pieces for the AWCS(American Womens club, shanghai) and for SEA(Shanghai Expat Association)magazines,...Expand for more
as you may recall that I was an editor for the THS newspaper. I belong to the UW Alumni Association, and the Chancellor and a delegation visited Shanghai. I am also active in the Oxford University Alumni, and the chancellor visited China as well. My MA and BS are UW-Madison, with a degree in British Lit from Oxford University, in England. My companion is a beautiful white Orientale Blanc, a relative of the Siamese, whom I rescued, from abandonment, in a thunder storm, in my garden in Nanjing upon arrival in China. I have always loved cats for company, dogs for walking, and horses, for riding. I still defend endangered species, and care about old heritage architecture as I did, in HS and at university. I work on "Explore Shanghai Heritage", advocacy for historical buildings, especially house museums. For those of you who are wondering, along with sponsoring a college student in Russia, and mentoring another in Central Asia, I have two new mentoriees in China. These are my "sons" and "daughters". I adopted a child in Thailand that I sponsored for a decade, through her education and one of my students at Princeton In Asia, visited her family in the village and sent me photos; she wrote to me every month. I was married for nearly 20 years to a multi talented artist who became tragically ill at which time I lost him and our life together. I subsequently went into foreign service as a foreign educator. . .
