Janet's Story
Life
Like many of us, I went to college after H.S. graduation. At that time it didn't interest me much, so I went to work, got married (1964) and had my only child, Matthew (1966).
I decided to return to college and graduated from ASU with BS in Justice Studies, and Master of Public Administration(ASU also). Went to work with U.S. Dept. of Labor as an investigator for 8 years - both Phoenix and San Francisco. Lots of travel but a grueling schedule.
Thought there must be life beyond government work so moved to San Francisco, was the Executive Director of HIV/AIDS organization. Got interested in the connection between culture and medicine, so joined the Doctoral program at University of New Mexico in Sociology. Chose UNM as they have an excellent medical school and related medical programs. Graduated with Ph.D. in Sociology (medical speciality) and now teach Sociology of Medical Practice, Gerontology, and ...Expand for more
Death & Dying at UNM.
This year (2008) I am teaching in the BA/MD program at University of New Mexico - a joint venture between main and medical campuses.
I spent a year (several years ago)as a Visiting Professor at ASU-West. I now split my time between New Mexico and Arizona (where my family lives). Here in NM, I teach, do research on the problem of heroin overdoses in northern NM, and am an officer in a non-profit organization that sponsors health-related research.
In Arizona I mostly try to keep track of my aging mother (a situation that is common to many of us), spend time with my son-most of it spent with me trying to make him feel guilty about not providing me with a least one grandchild.
I love teaching, being able to have projects both in NM and AZ, and lately have been wondering about all my old friends from North. Would love to hear from all of you about where the past 40 years have taken you!
