Janice's Story

Most of my life I lived with my dad on the family farm on the outskirts of Fredonia. During high school years, I didn't do much with classmates as I lived too far away and we were always busy with the farm. I won't say I was deprived of friends, I more often chose to be on my horse, Mini bike, snowmobile or whatever seasonal thing was appropriate. Hung out alot with cousins in the Jamestown, Frewsburg area. During the later part of my high school years, I worked at Arby's and I sold my horse to buy a car. Didn't attend the senior prom because my dad got remarried that weekend. After graduation I worked a few jobs here and there but still stayed in the area. Married my husband Andy, in 1980. He's a rival Dunkirk Boy- (I know I know- A Marauder- How could I??? ) We've got 2 great kids- Scott, lives in Ohio with his wife, Nikki, their sons Ryan and Nicholas, and my princess granddaughter Emily. Scott is the production/ Mailroom Manager for the Warren Tribune Chronicle Newspaper in Warren. Our daughter Cheryl lives with her son, Dylan, in Fredonia. My grandchildren are my joy. Check out their photos on my facebook site. I love spending time with them and as the saying goes "If I'd known being a grandma would be so much fun, I would have done that first!!!" In 1980 Andy and I moved with our kids back into the farm house I grew up in and so now I live at home- Literally. But I feel blessed to have been able to raise my kids in the country with all the experiences you can never get from living in the city. I will have to admit that I am and will always be a country girl at heart. Although I love...Expand for more
to visit the big cities, I can never wait to get back home to my peaceful, serene, hilltop country home, where the kids running threw my backyard belong to deer, coyote, turkey, skunk, bear or other such parents. Andy and I were Chautauqua County Foster Parents for over 16 years. During this time we opened our home to over 160 teenagers - Does that let me win the award for having the most children at any upcoming reunions? Life changed for me a couple years ago and while I’m still in the farmhouse, Andy has chosen another path. When one door closes another opens and that’s how I’ve learned to live life. I have been the Special Promotions Advertising Coordinator for the last 18 years at the OBSERVER in Dunkirk. I do the specialty themed pages of advertising. It is a new job everyday. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes fun, but working here also allows me to keep up on the comings and goings of old friends. Genealogy is my spare time hobby. Years ago, I got to plan a vacation that took me back in time. We re-traced the migration of my ancestor's trek all the way back to the colonists in Plymouth who arrived in 1635. We went to the original settlement areas stopping to visit their burial grounds and honor their memories. It was a great trip. I'm also an avid "Christmas Village" collector. My display is huge over 300 houses and 1000 accessories. "Gee Village" comes to life every October and disappears every January- I guess if you want to know anything more- you'll just have to ask. May the happiness of love- the blessings of family and the joys of grandchildren be part of your daily life.
