Janice's Story
Workplace
I began teaching in Birmingham at Whatley Elementary School in 1971. After moving to Louisville, Kentucky I taught a Developmental Disability Kindergarten class for River Region Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board until I began teaching 6th grade in the Henry County (Kentucky) Schools.I became the Henry County Middle School Guidance Counselor in 1976 and in 1990 moved to the Shelby County (Kentucky) Public Schools as the Guidance Counselor at Shelby County East Middle School. I retired from that position in December 1999. I read scholarships and wrote press releases for the Papa Johns Scholars Program, facilitated the Junior Giving Program of Oldham County and for the past five years have worked part-time as an elementary school guidance counselor (clearly the most wonderful job on the planet!). I just re-retired in June, 2010.
In between I have raised my daughter (Karen) and two step-daughters and am now the grandmother of four incredible grandchildren.
In May, 2005 I lost my beloved husband and wonderful friend, Jay, to bladder cancer. I have discovered that the trick to surviving such a blow is to stay busy, think outside of yourself, be grateful for your friends, try new things, keep a positive attitude and laugh as often as possible.
I am in my third year of working with the little guys at a newly reopened school with a very diverse population. I...Expand for more
love it!!
I love traveling and am planning my fantasy trip to Machu Pichu (and trying to find someone else who wants to go). Love to go to the beach but am always up for a road trip anywhere.
I a dog-,a Coton du Tulears . I hope to get back into golf this year. For the past few years I have been going to the color guard performances, swim meets, and band concerts of the grandchildren.
I remember Banks and my friends from Banks with great fondness. I hope my classmates are well and happy.
November 2013
An update- I am so happy to say that after retiring twice I am enjoying a new part time career as an interim counselor for counselors on extended leave (so far all have been maternity :-) ) In August I moved into a new home and am getting settled. I am fortunate to have dear friends in lovely places-Williamsburg, VA and Naples, FL and have been traveling and staying for long stays- I love my frineds, the beach and William and Mary football. All in all I am fortunate to have good health, great kids and grandkids, people who make my life rich in so many ways and work that makes me feel productive when I want to do it.
It is true that every ending is the prelude to a new beginning. My prayer for you is that you have peace, health and happiness and a great deal of all three. I also hope that Alabama goes all the way this Year- how could they not? Roll Tide
Peace,
Jan
