Janice's Story

Life BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE FOR JANICE HARRIS JACKSON Janice Harris Jackson graduated from East Orange High School (EOHS) in June 1965. She was Vice President of the Class and she remembers fondly many performances with “Buckskin and Brush” Drama Club and singing with the choruses. Janice was the first person to win for EOHS the New Jersey Contest in the Reading of Poetry at Rutgers – Newark (the contest is now held at Kean University) She was one of the EOHS Art Majors. After graduation she enrolled at Montclair State University where she received a B.A. degree in Fine Arts Education and a Master of Arts degree in Speech, Theater and Communication. Jan Jackson began her career as an art teacher in the Newark Public Schools. She went to Kean University (then Newark State College) as a recruiter for minority students in the Office of Admissions. Janice worked at Kean University for 33 years before her recent early retirement from her position as the Director of the Office of University/School Collaborations in the College of Education. She continues to teach at Kean University as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Communication. Janice Harris Jackson is a Subscribing Diamond Life Member of the Newark Branch NAACP and a Subscribing Silver Life Member of the New Brunswick Area NAACP. Janice Harris Jackson is President Emeritus of the New Jersey Association of Black Educators (NJABE), she is one of the founding members and a Past President of the Concerned Black Personnel of Kean University (CBP). She is the former State Education Chair for the New Jersey State NAACP. Janice chaired the successful Endowment Campaign for Kean University’s Wynona Moore Lipman Ethnic Studies Center -- the University’s first academic facility named for an African American. sociation of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. (NANBPWC). and she recently served as the Newsletter Editor for the Northeast District. Janice has always been very proud to be the third generation of her family born in the great City of Newark, New Jersey. She is a product of the Newark and East Orange, New Jersey Public Schools. She began her formal Education at the Fuld Neighborhood House Nursery (now Friendly Fuld), a long-honored Newark institution, and she attended both 18th Avenue School and Roseville Avenue School before moving to East Orange. In the great City of East Orange, Janice attended Stockton and Columbian Schools before EOHS. Janice Harris Jackson is a lifelong member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. She worked with the College Ministry to establish the Church’s first endowed scholarship in 1997, on the occasion of her Mother’s 75th Birthday. Metropolitan Baptist Church’s Kathryn Helms Harris Scholarship has been given to 20+ deserving college students. Janice Harris Jackson has been married to Sidney L. Jackson, Sr. for forty-eight years and they reside in Plainfield, New Jersey. Sidney, Sr. is a graduate of Arts High School in Newark and Hampton University. Sidney and Janice Jackson are the proud parents of one grown son, Sidney L. Jackson, Jr., or “Rory,” who is also a graduate of Hampton University. Both Sidney, Sr. and Sidney, Jr. are members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Janice still enjoys poetry, music and the theater. She travels extensively and she has written her own “great American novel” that she is still trying to get published. She has always loved dogs. The family's huge Bouvier, "Fauster," passed away in 1998 at age 15 and she thinks and thinks again about getting another great dog in her retirement.
