Janice's Story

Life I moved to North Dakota in 1967 with my husband, LaVere and lived on a wheat farm for the next 17 years. I attended the University of North Dakota, and graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Elementary Education. I taught first and second grades in Fordville, ND until 1984. In 1983, my husband was hit by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle. He was killed instantly. I had two sons, 11 and 13 at the time. I later married Ron and moved to Grafton, which is "city" living compared to being on a farm, but a small town of under 6000 people. Then came Matthew who was born with Down syndrome. I stayed home with him in the early years, doing substitute teaching and writing children's books. When Matt was 17, I wrote a book about his life and growing up with Down syndrome. It is called For the Love of Matthew., Growing Up with Down Syndrome. I give motivational speeches to groups interested in learning more about Down syndrome and the potential that lies within. Matt is a shining example as he is an accomplished muscian with two CDs to his credit. I do some private tutoring, play piano and...Expand for more
I am a substitute teacher. I have 4 grandchildren who all live right here in North Dakota. My Mom and Dad moved to Florida in the early 70s to get away from the cold weather. When my Dad was diagnosed with Alzhiemers, they moved here to be close to me and my family. He passed away in 2002 on the day my book was released. Such an irony, as he was the one who always encouraged me to write. My Mom, who is 92 this year still lives here, only a block away. She loves North Dakota, cold weather and all!! This website has been great for connecting with old friends I have not seen or heard from in over 40 years! My love to all of you!! :-) My new book has finally arrived! Ironicaly It came on March 21st which is World Down Syndrome Day. It is called "Matt Houska: Ability Not Disability" which is a sequel to "For the Love of Matthew." Anyone interested in obtaining a copy, you may go to Xlibris.com. It is available in hard cover for $29.99, soft cover for $19.99 and e-book for $3.99. I would also be most happy to personally send you a copy. Thanks to all who have been supportive!!! Love you!!
