Janice's Story

I love to travel. I guess it comes by naturally since my mother was from the south and we would visit my grandmother in Florida most summers. My ultimate goal is to retire in the winters to Cocoa Florida and live on the Indian River. Love it there!! Starting in 1986, I began traveling overseas when my cousin married his sweetheart in England. It definitely changed the direction of my travels. After graduating with my associates degree in 1993, I spent three weeks in Europe, visiting Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Luxembourg. It was wonderful; spending evenings in the Black Forest to going to the North Sea. It was a dream come true as I spent time with family and our exchange student. My German was rough but I did understand what most people were saying. In 2002, Kathy Hazen (another '68 graduate) and I traveled to the United Kingdom. We spent two weeks in England, Scotland and Wales. It was wonderful. We met so many wonderful people that I still write. I was so excited when I found the poem I had read in 9th grade about Scotland in a poetry book. This poem had me dreaming for years about Scotland. I knew someday I would be there! In 2004, we spent two weeks in Ireland. Ireland was magnificant... it was beautiful. I found it quite amuzing. After going to dinner and theatre, I proceeded to the hotel bar to spend time with our Canadian friends. While there, I had a gentleman come over to talk to me. He was from the United States and asked where I was from. I told him Underwood, Iowa and he knew exactly where it was!! I couldn't believe it! Most people in Iowa don't know where Underwood is located. In our continued conversation, I found out he had lived in Des Moines and worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and was in Ireland with some friends to play golf! When I decided to take leave for the evening, he did not want me to go. When I got to Kathy and my room, I was laughing... who would have ever thought you could go to Ireland to be 'hit on' by a Des Moines insurance man?! In 2006, Kathy and I spent two weeks in Italy. Had a magnificant time! We always go three days prior to joining our tour group so spent three days in Rome on our own. How magnificant! Our group was made up of people from Australia, England, Wales and Scotland. We had parties in our room every night. Even our tour guide would join us. My travels came to a halt for a couple years. After returning home from Italy, my husband and I were told...Expand for more
we were going to be grandparents again. Well, our excitement was soon overriden by fear when we found out our son had Stage 4 cancer. I have never prayed so much in my life! As a result of excellent medicine, lots of prayers, and John's wonderful attitude, he is still with us. He went thru three months of weekly chemo, one month of every day radiation, and then discovered he had renal cancer. Again, our prayers were answered as the tumor was encapsulated so only a portion of his kidney was removed. John goes back every six months and if things stay clean at his next six month check up, we're hoping they will put him on a once a year schedule. We now have four beautiful granchildren... Alexa-12, Alayna-8 1/2, Madison 4 1/2, and Garrett who will be 2 next month. I have finally talked my husband in traveling out of the country with me. I tried to get him to go to Paris but Mexico is where we'll be. He's excited so that's all that counts. I am hoping that Kathy and I can go back to England in a year but will need to see where my 401K goes from here; hopefully it starts going up! Walking, reading, gardening or a glass of wine. I have a wonderful friend who is 80 years young. She is like a mother to me and has given me a lot of advice over the years. We paint together, share books and just enjoy each other's company. I love Dances with the Stars. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen and add on a a bedroom and sitting room downstairs. My dream home would be in Florida on the Indian River.. How to be strong! If I won $100 million, I'd give a lot of it to the homeless, help workers that have lost their jobs and our church, then spend the rest on my children, my husband and our farm. My current age is 58. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be retired. I was so completely wrong!. My best friend would tell you I'm fun and wild, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet. Are you kidding!! I couldn't fit in anything I wore 10 or 20 years ago and if I could, I don't think I would! I share my home with my husband and our little dog, which I find very loving. In 10 years, I hope to be retired and traveling. I'm going to get there by working until I'm 67. Kathy Hazen and I started running around in 7th grade. I knew her in 6th grade but she was in the other class so I didn't get to know her until 7th. We seemed to have the same values and likes of history, geography, and literature.
