Janice's Story
Military
I joined the Navy in 1973, when it was very unpopular, but felt a need to "belong" & to make a difference. I was a Radioman in the Navy. Got involved in a very abusive marriage, later divorced & to recover from that, joined the Marine Corps Reserves in early 1977, serving as Journalist & photographer, and decided to return to A/D & yes, I had to do boot camp in Parris Island, even though I was prior-service! I went on to school at Ft. L. Wood, MO as a Heavy Equip Oper, the 2nd WM to do so. I later changed my MOS to Aircraft Maint Data Analyst. 2, when I had orders to become a Drill Instructor, but was pregnant with my 2nd son. Since I had already lost a pregnancy to the Corps in 1980 in Iwaukuni, Japan, (& nearly died from that), I felt it best to preserve my pregnancy & ensure that my baby lived. With Reserve duty, I have nearly 10 years of military service. My oldest son, born in 1979 went on to join the Corps, but injured his leg in Parris Island & now is at Kent St Univ, & my high-school age daughter is in the NJROTC program here locally. Her instructors feel that with her good parenting (blush), she is being groomed for the Naval Academy (but it will be her choice!)
