Janice's Story
I was fortunate to meet my soulmate, a Navy submariner, during the first quarter of attending Shawnee Junior College in Southern Illinois. We were married in January 1971 and finished college with two Master's Degrees. Dewey taught Vocational Electricity and later, English, at MacArthur.
I taught English at Millikin, Richland Community College, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade for 20 years at the "old" Johns Hill Magnet School. We have two kids, Emily and Aaron, and eight grandkids who range from 5 to 15. e such as Norman Stewart again. Living in Decatur, I have had the honor of running into old classmates everywhere and even having parent/teacher conferences with some. I truly appreciate the opportunity to get together now and then with members of the MHS Class of 1970.
During the pandemic, I co-authored a book with my son about our church, St. John's Episcopal, here in Decatur, IL. The book is monumental -- hardback, lots of pictures, 850 pages, and biographies of 58 rectors.
Obviously, in fifty years, everyone's life has had its ups and downs. Through it all, I have chosen to live by four-year Beirut hostage, Terry Waite’s, philosophy, “Part of the secret, I think, is to make a companion of the experience.” It has made all the difference.
Life is good.
