Janice's Story

Before the 50th class reunion we were asked to send in a story "life after St. James. Mine is as follows Life after St. James Janice Steimel Hunt June 13th 1955, the day after graduation . I slept in. I mean I really slept in.12 ,1:00 O¿clock maybe. Please¿.. Who could remember. In 1957 my 49 year old mother lost her battle with cancer. It was a very difficult time in my life. Hopefully that will be the last sad thing I write here. Some years later, after 2 brief engagements , one to Joe Mullen and one to Tom Hunt (the third ones the charm) I married Tom Hunt on September 26th 1959 Moving on------ Our first miracle occurred on October 24th 1963. We named her Kelly Lynn. She is currently an Analytical Chemist for the pharmaceutical company Phizer , in Ann Arbor. God love her, she loves to cut things up and analyze where the medication went etc. I guess someone has to do it in order for prescription drugs to help us in our old age. Our next miracle occurred on June 13th, 1965. Nineteen months after the first one ( it¿s called twins the hard way) we named her Karen Marie. She is currently a Medical Technologist in the lab at Wm. Beaumount Hospital in Troy Mi. She is always drawing Toms¿ blood and checking it for his cholesterol level. Our final miracle arrived September 4th, 1969. (three weeks early. She earned a special place in her mothers heart for that one ) We named her Kristy Ann. Currently she is a Vice President, Senior Portfolio Manager for Melon Trust in Philadelphia Pa. She along with a team of other Portfolio Manager Professionals, manage the private wealth of clients, (trust babies mostly). And here we weren¿t sure she would ever be able to balance her own check book. Who knew???? Some people are not meant to be grandparents. That be us. Our girls believe they are all living with their life time partners. Those partners are all women. We have educated ourselves on the subject. It¿s a chemical thing. They are still our daughters. WE still love them from the bottom of our heart. We love their partners. They are happy. We are all Gods children. We have moved on¿¿ We have traveled extensively throughout the world. Been on most continents, excluding the two polar circles, and Australia. We have been to New Zealand, but I think that qualifies as one of the many islands. We have been in most of the states in the United States. I don¿t remember being in Idaho. Does anyone live in Idaho??? Some one must live there or how would we get those wonderful potatoes we all love. This is starting to sound like one of those horrible Christmas news letters so I will move on¿.. In 1986 or 87, my sister, Adarine, my friend Betty Ann Murphy, Zeader Chaffie, and I took stained glass classes. My sister and my friend got on with their life. I became addicted.I made stained glass for our houses, my relatives, my friends. I got to a point that everything I looked at I wondered, ¿how would that look if I made it in glass¿. I would have joined ¿stained glass anonymous¿ but there was no such thing at the time, and I didn¿t have the chutzpah to start a chapter. I dabble in stained glass every now and then still. The addiction has passed. I moved on¿. Sometime in the middle 80¿s Tom started importing Llamas and Alpacas from South America. He sold them mostly to private owners throughout the United States. The nucleus heard remained at our drive through park, (African Safari Wildlife Park) in Ohio. One day we got the brilliant idea that it would be fun to bring a couple of alpacas (smaller, fuzzier, nicer ,version of a llama) to the northern Michigan cottage where we spend our summers. Thus started my career as a farm lady. I got up every morning and fed them, gave them water, and scooped the poop. I groomed them, I washed them, I fluffed and puffed them. We walked them in parades , took them for walks in the woods, took them to nursing homes. At the end of each summer they would return to their home in Ohi...Expand for more
o. We did this for a number of years. Then one year something called ¿Bovine TB¿ turned up in the northeast corner of Crawford county in the deer population. Even though this is not near us, it is in the same county. We were informed by the USDA, that if we brought them into Michigan we would not be able to return them to Ohio. Thus ended my career as a farm ¿woman. I was getting to old for it anyway. I have moved on.. In the early winter of 2003, some Bonita Springs Florida friends and I started a chapter of ¿The Red Hat Society.¿ The Red Hat Society is a disorganization 100 % dedicated to the idea of woman over 50 having fun!!! We do have fun. If you start the group you automatically become ¿The Queen Mother¿. I am the queen mother. I like being the queen. When I was a child and would play dress up, they wouldn¿t even let me be a princess. Now I¿m the dam queen¿. The name of our chapter in Florida is ¿The Bodacious Broads of Bonita. In the Spring of the same year Cindy Brenny Herron and I formed another chapter in northern Michigan and invited some St James gals and some neighbors to join us. Again I am the queen. Cindy is the Vice Queen, Queen of Vice, Vice Queenie, whatever she wants to be. The name of the Michigan group is ¿The Fabulous Floozies of the North.¿ So here we are almost 66 years old and we have reached the majestic status of ¿floozies.¿We may not be as effective as floozies in our 60¿s as we could have been in our 20¿s but its all in fun. We like being FLOOZIES.¿ I like being the Queen. Tom gets a little exasperated with the queen thing from time to time, but hay he is married to the queen, that must make him the King. He should be ok with that. Moving on¿ Tom and I have been married for a looooooong time. You do the math. We have shouted and screamed and stamped our feet at each other more times than I can count. But we have also had many times when we have said ¿ I am so glad your are here, I couldn¿t have done this without you.¿ I believe we have been a couple for many lifetimes , and perhaps there will be many more. We are going to keep doing it over and over until we get it right¿ and then¿we will.. Move on¿.. In the early winter of 2004 I went to a red hat luncheon. The speaker was Kelly Lang. She is now a mystery writer. She was the first female NBC TV news anchor in California. She talked of many things, but the thing I remember most, she said every few years we have to reinvent ourselves. Investigate new avenues. Go in a different direction. I left the luncheon that day inspired. I am going to reinvent myself. Dhaaa¿ As I read over the pages I guess I have been doing that all along. Tom must feel he has been married to many different women. All said and done---I am definitely older, not smarter. If I was ½ as smart now as I thought I was in June 1955, I would be approaching brilliance. I am wiser. A little rounder¿. Well ¿maybe.. a lot rounder. A little wrinkled¿. Well ..maybe ..a lot wrinkled. But basically I am still Janice Steimel that graduated from St. James in June 1955, in Ferndale Mi. (a half a century ago) Surely the 7th paragraph shocked many. However the earth did not come to a screeching halt. I have wonderfull updates. Our youngest daughters partner gave birth to a wonderfull boy April 3rd 2006. Our first Grandson. January 29th, 2007 our middle daughter gave birth to a 9lb 6 oz boy. We feel soo blessed. These boys are the delight of our life.. Something even more shocking to many would be to find out the last boy was baptized in a catholic church in June. The pastor was fully aware of the girls situation. In fact our daughters partner is taking classes to become a catholic. We have come a long way from St. James... We are truly all Gods children. Another update...Sept 6th 2008 our youngest daughter Kristy gave birth to beautiful twins. Nicholas Ryan and Kathryn Janice. They are the most beautiful babies. I love this grandmother thing. It has rejuvenated me.
