Janice's Story

I always wanted to be independently wealthy and a beach bumb when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a non-realistic goal. As it turns out, they were not entirely wrong. I still visit beaches in Florida where we live, occasionally back to the Jersey area when we come back for our summer visits and anywhere else I can get to sand and sea. One out of two ain't bad.. Since one of our getaways is in Lauderdale-by-the-sea (Florida, a block from the ocean), i try to go there a few times a year just to chill out. The town is small and the people generally friendly. We have been going down there for the better part of the last 30 year - some of the older folks that we have known for most of that time are passing on and it does make you aware of your own mortality. What a few hours on the beach will do to erase those images... attitude adjustment. We have 3 sons - a big surprise, I'm sure, to a lot of people. I can't imagine my life without them despite the day to day challenges. Since I started late,2 are still at home with us- two graduated at FSU and one from UF. My, how time has flown. The house is also filled with cats, reptiles of differing kinds, and a turtle that we found in the backyard by the pool. The collection sometimes makes it a challenge when we are hoping away from home for a bit. Only when all of us come back to PA do all the animals come with us on the trip. Since I was first introduced to computers in grade 10, it has been my backbone. I have spent over 50 years in the Information Sciences workforce and I don't regret my choice. It seems like just yesterday that is all started with Mr....Expand for more
Allen in Beth Voc-tech. My first job was at Bethlehem Area Voc Tech, where I was paid minimum wage - I think it was $1.60 per hour to do clerical work in preparation for the next school year. What I remember most about it is that it only lasted 2 weeks and lead me to a job at NCACC where I stayed for 22 years. This was followed by a move to Florida and a year at Pratt Whitney in West Palm Beach where I worked the Information Technology side of the C117 transport planes and the F22 fighter jets. This was followed by another move but now it was only up the road a bit to Tallahassee Florida where I started working for a Computer Consultant company CMSI and then Computer Associates for another 10 years. I am still in Tallahassee but, strangely enough, I am back in the education arena working for the Florida Department of Education. Funny how things old turn new again.. Seems like I made a full circle both in life goals and work. Hmmm. If I won $100 million, I'd give 500,000 (to start) of it to family members, then spend the rest on paying off mortgages for numerous houses we own, vacation to places I always wanted to visit (such as Tahiti, and the Island of Bled - yup, still the water theme), expand retirement investments for us and the kids and finally, select and support a number of good causes close to my heart that would use the monies to help others live a better life. They would include both personal and medical opportunities. Of course, dreams are what get you through the day regardless of the reality. What was that saying from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - "keep dreaming Butch, that's what you're good it".
