Janice's Story
Life
In 2004, I was living in Las Vegas and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis but I'm doing fine. In 2006, I moved from Las Vegas to Duluth, MN as the heat was too hard on me with my MS. My husband passed away in July of 2007. I love living in Duluth much better than Vegas. I don't have any children and can no longer work. I do have lots of friends and hobbies, and my sister is five minutes away. I can't believe how fast the time has flown!!! I sure miss the 'good old days.' I spend a lot of time walking, visiting with friends and family, several different types of crafts. I live right on the shore of Lake Superior, so the beach is only a few-minute walk from my apartment. I live in a high-rise on the 11th floor and have a wonderful view of Lake Superior and the ships that pass back and forth in front of my window. I have a dog and two parakeets but no kids. I have plenty of nieces and nephews, all of whom I love dearly and spend lots of time with. All in all, I'm doing pretty darn good!
School
After graduating school, I pretty much worked in the medical field...Expand for more
in addition to driving a semi over the road with my husband, helping in his construction business, and then I got divorced. Later, I met my current husband and was very happy. I had been working as a surgical technologist and then did medical transcription which was what I was doing when I moved to Vegas. After being diagnosed with the MS and having more and more trouble doing the work, I finally was approved for disability. I still do craft work and other things to keep my mind active. Living in Duluth is much better for my MS. The climate is perfect and I feel much safer here.
Workplace
I had taken several medical classes including nurses' aide, medical assistant, and then surgical technology. I worked in several different medical facilities as a scrub tech, but then after my divorce I decided to do transcription. I worked at home, split shift, so I could go to the pool in between shifts while living in Vegas. I loved it, and I really hated giving it up due to the MS. I remarried, my husband passed away, and I ended up leaving Vegas due to heat intolerance.
