Janice's Story
Life
I am an art teacher at Dickinson High School in Jersey City. I create portraits, work in water color and acrylics, sculpt and create jewerlry.
I live in the Forest Hill section of Newark. I have a full life filled with good family and friends, that make me very happy. My favorite possessions are my 2003 z4, my 1998 Buick Rivera and my beautiful swimming pool retreat. I love the cars and will keep them forever. I have four dogs that I have rescued. My husband passed away in June 2009. Perhaps the worse thing I have ever endured in my life. Certainly worse for him as I wish he could have had more years of living.
Although I have a principals certification, I decided to stay in the classroom doing what I love to do. I plan to retire January 2012. I am in contact with my cousins Carol and John who graduated IHS with me in 1962. We have become closer these last few years. Sigrid Haug Liepold continues to be my best friend, we now consider ourselves sisters.
I find it very difficult to believe that I have lived more than sixty five years. It seems like yesterday when I was graduating and seventeen. Now, with retirement almost here, I say to myself,"who would have thought this day would be so close?" I am certain we all ask ourselves, where did the years go? I know I had a great time, with no regrets. Some times I was dangerous, but again no regrets.
I have been and am now a lover of the earth and all it has to offer. I have drunk from the cup nectar.
I always wanted to be a artist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. A...Expand for more
s it turns out, they were right.
I love to swim even though i am not a great swimmer.
My hero is Orson Wells. He thought out of the box and so do I.
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Angelo Ragusa, because we were very close a long time ago..
Making art is my way of life.
If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen and a couple of bathrooms and add on nothing. My dream home would be my house right now..
If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to my brother Bud, then spend the rest on myself, friends and the humane societies..
My current age is 67. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be decrepid. I was so completely wrong.
I sell my art work.
My best friend would tell you I'm loyal, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as good.
I wear black, black and black. I wear color in accessories, shoes, bags and jewelry.
I share my home with my dogs, which I find wonderful.
I have never won anything remotely like an award.
In 10 years, I hope to be 77. I'm going to get there by painting and having a good time laughing with Sigrid.
My oldest and dearest friend is Sigrid Haug. We have been friends since our freshman year in high school. Who knows what chemistry is between two people and why it has lasted so long.
My first job was at Land O Pines School, where I got paid $5600 to teach middle school art. What I remember most about it is the fact that i was one of three women teachers with 36 men teachers..
I will never forget going to Olympic Park with Mary Anne Matiash. She knows why.
