Janie's Story
I was in first grade with Mark W. and Darrel b. at Arthur H. Smith school and I have the picture to prove it. I learned English there with Dick and Jane. Then they moved us across town to the New Elementary where someone hit me with a basketball in the nose during recess. I looked like a clown. My second grade teacher used to take a nap during recess, she was a "mature" woman. I used to hold hands with two boys during music class. I loved both of them dearly! I still think about them. Not mentioning names!
Third grade put me back at my original school where the race for space was on. I taught the class Spanish with Paco and Rosita. I got a "B" in Spanish. My mom called Mr. Rayburn. I read so much during fourth grade I went through all the colors in the SRA box. I decided to be like Mrs. Warner and become a Teacher.
Fifth grade...boys! Sixth grade...more boys and the Tea at the junior high. I loved science experiments with Mr. Baker...Expand for more
but fell in love with my 7th grade English teacher, Mr. F at the junior high. High School I expanded my mind with rock music in the art class and math in trig and conversations with Robert W. who did physics for me. I got a "C". Loved going out to the WSU experimental station and learning chromotagraphy with Mrs. Davis in some lab class.
College and my boyfriend, now husband, made me a slackard and I took the easy way out. After Calculus, I went with Ron P. ('71) to Mexico, decided there was no hurry to graduate majored in Spanish became a teacher, married my husband --- Warren (Cheney '68), we travelled to 22 different countries, I taught 35 years and I am now retired. Had one child, who has yielded one grandchild and love the additional kids and 5 grandkids that came with the husband. Now at the ancient age of 60 I look back and think, "It's been great" but like a roller coaster ride...I have an inkling there will be more to come.
