Janine's Story
Life
Once, when I sent one of those dumb emails out asking friends to use just one word to describe me, someone said "Opinionated." Hmm maybe that's true? I seem to have this annoying habit of having a story for every situation, which often supports my "opinion." Later, the same person asked if they could change their word to "smart." Maybe I'm neither... you decide Just when I'm feeling smart, I find myself in the company of people who blow me away with their intellect and wit and I suddenly feel very simple and foolish. The older I get, the more "really smart" friends I seem to acquire. If you can't beat 'em; join 'em - right?
I'm probably not what you'd call a shy person, but I am not comfortable in front of crowds either. Most people find me friendly and maybe even bubbly at times, but that's only on the surface. Few people ever know me on a deeper level, which is where most of the good stuff lies
My parents taught me more than I could appreciate when I was younger. My dad passed on his technical and mathematical knowledge and my mom instilled the finer arts and language skills. Both parents were from musical backgrounds and my dad took up playing the bagpipes in his 40's and joined the local pipe band, which ultimately became like an extended family to us. It also provided a lifetime of fond memories. In our house, it wasn't a matter of *if* you will play an instrument, it was "what" instrument you will play.
So... I tried several instruments (guitar, oboe, clarinet and violin) before settling on the flute. I became quite good and it's a gift my parents gave to me that I will always be grateful for.
After barely graduating high school, I followed my (now) ex-husband down to Los Angeles...Expand for more
in the 80's and stayed 7 years before returning to my hometown of Portland. Seventeen years (of misery) and two kids later, I was divorced and free! Not for long though... I met a cute little Swede a couple of years later and was exchanging vows once again. Thankfully, we have been happily married for three years and going strong.
A year ago, I decided to go back to school so have entered a two-year degreed program in Architectural Design. I'm emphasizing my program on Residential Design and will include a certificate in Kitchen and Bath Design in addition to my degree completion. For now, I work as a Facilities Agent.
That's just a little about me... I'll never get a job writing for Reader's Digest - that's for sure!
School
Hmmm not a lot to comment on here, as I was never a scholar. I partied through high school and was lucky to graduate! Ugh... how awful to admit.
I'm enrolled at PCC now in the Architectural Design program. I'm really enjoying it and even running a 3.8 GPA for once!
Workplace
After HS, I worked in retail for a year, then went to PSU the next. Given where the economy was at the time, I left with my then BF (now ex-husband) for So Cal and lived there until 1989, when we returned to OR. I found myself in Forest Products and Accounting and worked for Weyerheauser, Willamette Ind and a local company as an executive assistant. In 1998, I made a career change and landed a job in facilities with a high tech company. That lasted 3 great years until my job was eliminated 2 yrs ago. I have finally found another job, working for an environmental consulting firm. It's not my passion, but the people are really great here.**UPDATE** 11/03 - heheh... got laid off AGAIN! Back to temp jobs! :)
