Janis's Story

My entire life has been a wonderful adventure. I have done so many things it is difficult for me to tell my story. I have my life before Charles and after I married Charles (I was 49 when I got married). I moved to CA when I was 19 and lived in LA, which was quite a blast. I decided my life was going nowhere in LA so I returned to GA. I have worked many jobs and several of those were quite physical like Owen's Corning Fiberglass. I was one of eight women who were hired as guinea pigs at the plant, Me and one other girl proved that women could work that line so they had to hire other women. Next I worked as a photographer and got to travel a lot. Last job I was hired as a trainee assembler(NASA qualified solderer) for a company who was in the aerospace industry. I was privileged to work on many satellites and airplanes. I worked on the Space Shuttles, Hubble, F14, F16 and F22 , As I worked there I was promoted all the way to an Engineer. That was a great job with lots of challenges. I have done many things like showing/riding/training horses, nature photography which had me going to secluded places like the Everglades on my own, photographing inside a bat cave(with Linda's husband Tony) scuba diving, drag racing (on the street), captain of my houseboat, worked on my cars(brothers taught), had my own motorcycle and self taught to ride it, ran my own darkroom and developed film, made prints from color negatives and slides (again self taught),,built, repaired and wrote software for computers, learned hypnosis, refinished furniture, painted and wallpapered. After I got married the adventures accelerated, Charle...Expand for more
s was the lead on a radio astronomy site in North Carolina and I helped him with my brain and my hands. We worked on the 75 ft dishes which had been abandoned by the government. We had to find cables to operate/listen to the dishes which had been physically cut off, we also had to run new cable/fiber all around the site. I spent time photographing from on top of a 75 ft. dish with red wasp flying all around me. I also enjoyed some nights photographing the sky using a optical telescope(with mice running across my feet). Charles and I went to many conferences on radio and optical astronomy. I got my Ham Radio license after marrying Charles. When visiting Arecibo we were allowed to go into the dish's feed and walk the walkways above the 1,000 ft dish which I photographed extensively. At Greenbank, West Virginia we also got a tour of the new 300 ft dish, all the way to the top. We did skydiving for our 10th wedding anniversary. My very best adventure was going to Galapagos Islands, I toured with 5 other photographers and a guide on a sailboat, the animals were so incredible and also so unafraid. I had the best photography opportunity ever and I fully took advantage of that. I have got to go to many places including England, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Australia and many more US destinations. Since I have good health I have volunteered for 15 years helping Animal Shelters with work and photography. My life has been a big learning experience which has made me very grateful for all the opportunities, I thank God for my happy life. Soon Charles will retire and I am looking forward to more adventures.
