Janis's Story

I was born in Prattville in 1944, attended Prattville Elementary and Autauga County High School. Some of the fondest memories I have are the friendships made during this time. All these friends are very special to me still. When we get together, it's like we've never been apart. We had good teachers and loved school (most of us). Things were very different back then, and we think better! Remember the Lyric Theater, the Prattmont Drive-in Theater, The Buggy Whip, the Dairy Queen, and the Sock Hops after ballgames? Remember the Proms, the class plays, the band trips, and all the parties we had? Remember all the ones that went to school a short time with us and then moved away? Remember graduation, college, jobs, girlfriends, marrying (some more than once!), and coming back home to visit? Prattville has changed so much. We don't have to go to Montgomery now to eat, to the movies, to shop, or not much of anything! We have great medical facilities, and great restaurants, downtown has been revitalized, and it's still a great place to live! I married Newman Colee in 1963. In 1968, we had our first son, Chip (Newman, Jr.). We moved to Tuscaloosa, AL in 1970. In 1972, Newman developed a brain tumor and was in UAB hospital over 8 months. During this time, our second son, Christopher, was born in Tuscaloosa. In 1980, we moved back home to Prattville. Newman was sick off and on for 17 years, and died when he was 49 in 1990. In 1998, I married Sam Lowther, a bachelor and we have been living happy ever since. He works at Auburn University, and loves being a husband, step-father, and most of all a granddaddy! We have three grandchildren who are the love of our life - Christopher Newman, 16, Caroline York, 14, and Joseph Pearson, 3 1/2!! We enjoy Auburn football and baseball, even going to the Championship game in Arizona this year. We love to travel and go on at least two trips a year. We've been to Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and all over the U.S. The Prattville girls of the Class of '62 get together once a month and we are like family. We let the guys and spouses come too! We enjoy being together. At the present time, we are planning our 50th Class Reunion, and would love for any A...Expand for more
CHS classes to join us! More updates coming. All our family attends First Baptist Church of Montgomery. We are very family orientated, and love being together. I always wanted to be a wife and mother when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I relax my reading or watching television. My Mother, Janey Williams was my hero. I admired her very much. She always loved me unconditionally. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is John Mason, because he was sweet on me!. I love football and baseball. No pets and don't much care for reality t.v. (too much of them). To live life to the fullest! To love being with family, That they gave me the greatest gift they could give - my grandchildren!! They taught me that you can never love like you love family. If I won $100 million, I'd give a good bit of it to church, then spend the rest on family, friends and the future. My current age is 66. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wanting to be older. I worked for the State of Alabama 25 years in the same department. I was ready to retire! My best friend would tell you I'm iout-going, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as reserved. Basically I think I do. I wear what is comfortable and what I like. I share my home with my husband, which I find wonderful. In 10 years, I hope to be still kicking. I'm going to get there by staying healthy. I met Donna Wood when I first moved to Tuscalooas. We have been best friends since. WE are not alike, but just seemed to hit it off right away and through all these years. We are apart for long periods of time, but when we do get together, it's like we have never been apart. We know everything about each other and have shared many trials and secrets throughout the years. We truly love each other. My first job was at State Farm Insurance, where I got paid $1.15 per hour to answer phone, file, fill out forms. What I remember most about it is T.D. Archie and eating lunch with his family.. I remember seeing the movie "The Greatest Show on Earth." For a long time, I played on the trapeze and wanted to join the circus!
