Janis's Story
After graduation, I first attended Thornton Community College (now South Suburban College)for 2 years. After TCC, I then attended Chicago State University for two years (majoring in music at both schools. After four years (and still no degree), I finally decided I'd better go find a job, so I went looking and in June of 1976, I finally found one at Encyclopaedia Britannica, where I was employed in the Field Accounting Department for the next 18 years (during which time through the company reimbursement program I was able to complete my college degree in Behavioral Sciences at National Louis University by going to school at night). June of 1994, I married my husband Charles Spencer. In September of 1994, I was laid off from EB. After that, I worked for a girlfriend babysitting her infant son for the next two years. Then in January of 1997, my husband and I (who had also been laid off) began delivering newspapers, first for the Illinois Times and then for the Chicago Sun Times. Did this for the next 10 years until the delivery business went under. Since then, we have been living in my mother's home caring for her and the house after my father's death. Currently, I'm hoping to find a couple of businesses on line that I can work for or maybe start my own business.
