Janis's Story
Currently working as a freelance musician, journalist and instructor and living in Oxnard, CA. I also direct music at the San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura. Husband, Mike is newspaper editor, and our son Jeff is single. I am a thyroid cancer survivor, having had my second surgery in December 08, and ever more grateful for skilled surgeons who have preserved my voice. As a singer I am able to use my voice in ways I never imagined, and find it especially rewarding to sing at funerals where the music can really comfort bereaved families. I have had several lines of work since high school, including hair stylist, radio announcer and music teacher. It took me a while to realize that music would always be my passion, so I have concentrated a good part of the past 2 decades becoming a better musician and exploring options to use those skills in ways that make a difference. In addition, I completed my M.A in religious studies at Mount Saint Mary's College in Los Angeles. Have been doing lectures/workshops in music and liturgy in L.A., Orange and San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.
