Janis's Story

[Please check out the link to our 40th-year reunion on May 30, 2010 in Wilmington! The link is on the left side of this page "Class of 1970 Events 1 upcoming".] Life I knew Harry Landers in high school, of course (heck, I knew him at the North Intermediate), but not until our 5th-year high school reunion did I "discover" him. We started dating, and married the following May. We just celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary. Incredible... I hardly even feel 32 years old most days! Our twin sons are 30 (born in 1978). I kept my last name, and we gave one twin my last name, and one twin Harry's last name. Jackson Jaquith LANDERS, and David Landers JAQUITH. David has (can you believe it?) changed his name to Waldo Jaquith (Hey, he's not pierced or tattooed!). Our daughter, Jill Landers JAQUITH, is 26 (born 1983). Jackson is married to Tricia Smith, and he works for Harry in his insurance business: Landers Underwriting. (I'd give you the URL for his business, but it's against the rules here. Bet you can figure it out...) Jack and Tricia had their first baby (our first grandchild) on Dec. 30, 2003: Ida Beatrix Landers. And in February of 2006, her little brother, Harry Jaquith Landers, was born. Waldo graduated from Virginia Tech with a BA in Political Science in May 2005. He's involved in Virginia politics, as is his wife, Am...Expand for more
ber Capron. (They got married Sept. 4, 2005.) If you do an internet search for him, you'll get a zillion results. Very colorful character. Jill graduated from Virginia Tech, magna cum laude, (and a semester early) in December of 2004). She earned a Masters degree in psycho-linguistics from the University of Virginia in 2007. She now lives and works in Manhattan, where her job is coming up with names for new products and new businesses. Jack looks just like Harry (even has that same twisted sense of humor), Waldo looks just like me (except that he's 6 foot 4!), and Jill looks more like me every day. I've been a stay-at-home mother since the twins were born. I'm also a writer -- if you listen to National Public Radio, you may have heard my commentaries from time to time on PRI's "Marketplace." If you live in Virginia or North Carolina, you may have heard my commentaries pretty regularly on NPR-station WVTF. For several years, I wrote a column for the Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Virginia. I recently switched my column to another local paper: The Hook. I've published a collection of the commentaries (they're autobiographical, about growing up in Wilmington, etc.) in a book entitled "Birdseed Cookies: A Fractured Memoir." You can have a look at it at Amazon, or read a whole slew of them for free on my Web site: RadioEssays dot com.
