Jason's Story
College
I received a one-year scholarship to Central State UniversityÂs Jazz Program.
As I became a working adult, some of the habits I clothed myself with as a kid became second nature while others where a bit obscure. Although I received a one-year scholarship in music, I had to hold down a nearly full-time job to pay for my dorm, car and personal expenses. My unfettered growth in high school became a bit stifled when I opted for college. It appeared so much less personal and the friendships I had come to endear in high school seemed so far away. The praise I had really come to count on from my parents wasnÂt there on an everyday basis. My level of commitment towards school waned against the backdrop of making a living and I dropped out. I really felt relieved that I didnÂt have to juggle so much. My rather lackluster showing in grades reinforced my decision to leave.
Workplace
I made a rather poignant change when I joined the United States Marine Corps in 1990. I was twenty-eight years old. After a three-year tour that relocated me to Southern California, I left the Marine Corps and resumed a career in the carpet cleaning industry, where I had spent four years prior to my military service. For the last twelve years I have worked in this industry, finally starting my own company in August of 1998. Having my own business at this point fit well ...Expand for more
with my demanding schedule. My only son, Tyler was fighting Cancer at the young age of six. He lost the battle on October 11th,1999 at the age of seven and a half.
During these last six years, I have become very active in my community. I was a member of the Orange Chamber of Commerce until last year. During my membership, I served as an Ambassador. I was also the president of the Profit Connection, the ChamberÂs weekly networking lunch group. I also completed Leadership Orange, which is a nine month program designed to help community-minded individuals, play a part in their city. Our class project for leadership Orange was the development of Junior Leadership Orange. This is a condensed version of LO, for high school kids. I was the Chairman of the planning committee that developed and implemented the project. JLO has been on going for the last three years. I am a member of St. JohnÂs Lutheran Church, where I am active in MenÂs ministry and a musician in the Praise Band ministry.
The carpet cleaning industry has been good to me, but I cannot continue in this strenuous line of work indefinitely. I need to begin a career in a new and different direction. I realize that the only way I can compete in the current job market is with a minimum of a Bachelors Degree. I am committed to this end.
