Javier's Story
A friendly hello to all my friends, classmates, and relatives out there. I'm quite certain most of you don't remember me from High School. I used to keep to myself as was sorta shy. I tried to mingle, but somehow ended up mingling with the wrong crowd. I tried taking a sport in order to expose myself and make a statement. Yep, I made a statement alright. I sucked at Track. The coach was nice to me though. I had the "will" but no speed. When I saw how some of the guys stretched out before the run, I was amazed at how stiff I was. Needless to say, I ran or maybe I should restate that, ...I took a couple of steps running alongside another runner by the name of Santos. Man, did he have the legs and the speed. I believe I took four steps and when I looked up, he was at the finish line. WTH?! Nope, track was not for me. Juan Mancha was good at running, as was my cousin, David Zavala. David was pretty good at most sports. ...Expand for more
I guess, all the guys were pretty good at it, except me. They accepted me in their group and I made some friends there. As much as I "willed" my legs to move faster, they wouldn't. All I can say is, I gave it my all. I did manage to get my picture taken with the crew. Shoot, I may as well have been the "Water Boy." Lol
I also had a cousin going to McHi at the same time I was. David Zavala! David was in all kinds of sports. He ran track, played football, basketball, man o man, what a guy. David was popular in school AND I wasn't. I guess, that's one of the reasons I joined the track team or tried out for the track team, to be part of something. I don't know what I was searching for. An identity? Someone who would stand out in the crowd? Don't quite know. I was just a teenager, like most of us were, reaching out to be noticed and not just another face in the crowd. I was popular in the Principal's office, though. lol
