Jay's Story
Life
I consider myself blessed that I have been given more than I deserve thru God, friends, children, parents, a brother, a wife all decent, loving and giving. I have two wonderful sons Tony (44) and Derek (26). Tony graduated from Northern Arizona University with a BS in Construction Management while Derek graduated from West Point (May 2016) with a BS in Law and Legal Studies and is now a 1st Lt. in the Army serving in the 1st Armor Division. My wife Denise and I enjoy travel, golf, music and wine, being with our family and are thankful for all we have.
School
The teachers I remember the most are Mr. Gale in 10th grade Algebra who was intense but very bright and engaging, Mr. Teal in 10th grade Biology, Mrs. Ravenscraft in 12th grade math, Mr. Foxworthy in 12th Grade Physics, and Mrs. Griffin in 11th Grade French for not letting me get away with a very stupid thing I did that year and Mr. Rice in 11th Grade Chemistry for being a firm but fair teacher. If I could do it again, I would have tried much harder in all subjects . Best teacher I ever had was Mrs. Darcey in 5th grade at Gallatin Elementary School.
College
Too many colleges to ...Expand for more
count. I started as a math major at Chapman/Cerritos College (wrestled there for 3 semesters), attended West Point for 14 months then graduated with 192 semester units (way too much time changing majors/schools) with a BS in Civil Engineering (Structural) from Cal State University Fullerton with a short stint at UCLA in between. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to be and where I wanted to go.
Workplace
I've been very lucky and have viewed my work as a hobby for the past 30+ years or so. I've never questioned the choices I've made related to my career and am thankful to God for what I have been allowed to accomplish. I have been both self-employed since 1978 as a Structural Engineer in CA and also have spent the past 16 years with a publicly traded steel company in AZ. I taught both lower and upper division structural engineering courses at CSUF and CSULB from 1979-1982 in a part-time capacity. My professional interests lie in structural engineering and building behavior which has lead to some rewarding and unique patented solutions in problem solving. I enjoy work more than golf which explains why I still choose to work.
