Jay's Story

School I played basketball all through high school and volleyball in grade 13. Other highlights were dating Roberta Robinson, Sue Leppek, Christine Erb, Lynn Allwood, Liz Kruz, Avril Villiers and Janet Main (and a surprise kiss from N. S. that scared the shy guy that I was), working on the Grumbler year book and friendships. I also valued a conversational friendship with Marcy Budd that might have been more if I had been less shy. Then there was the crush I had on Sonya Glaser that I never acted upon (I always blamed it on Woodley's teasing - instead I should have proved him right). Oh yes, when I tore up my diploma on stage, I was fully aware that what counted was school records and what I said to the trembling man on stage was, "Marks aren't what's important; it's the people!" or words to that effect. College I started with a 3-yr Diploma in Christian Education, picked up a year of U of T Arts along the way, finished the B.A. in Religion and Native Studies at Brandon U after working with indigenous Manitobans for a couple of years and took three 7-wk summers and a couple of years of writing to get my M.A. in Teaching French at Simon Fraser U. en finished my B.A. After many odd jobs here and there while studying (including outdoor rink caretaker, vacuum cleaner sales and insurance sales), I taught French for 9 years in Manitoba (Shilo, Ashern and St. James- Assiniboia, Winnipeg) and 19 in Ontario (Simcoe and Delhi). Almost every year that I have taught, I have coached basketball and/or volleyball teams. I still play volleyball regularly. Since 1990, I have performed over 100 voyageur presentations (about the paddlers/portagers of the fur trade) of 2-3 hours duration to approximately 6000 students in grades 4-8. Now retired, I plan to write, supply teach and continue playing the role of voyageur in schools all over. In the summer of 2007, I spent 61 days living as a voyageur from 1790, dressed in moccasins and toque (and shirt and pants of course), sleeping in a bedroll on rocks, docks and lawns, eating pea soup, and bannock, paddling birch bark canoes 1500 km around Ontario from Ottawa to Kingston to Trenton to Lake Simcoe to Georgian Bay to the French River to Lake Nipissing to Trout Lake to the Mattawa River to the Ottawa back to Ottawa. I miss it. I have now traveled more than 3000 km. Check out my blog for more info and later expeditions: jaybail.wordpress.com.
