Jay's Story

Life Hi Classmates! I retired from Chevron after 26 years of service in 1993, but worked 3 more years for the Solaris Group part of Monsanto. I fully retired in 1996 due to some health challenges. I graduated from San Jose State in 1/1967 with a BS degree in Accounting and Finance. I still enjoy swimming as I did in high school and college. I am legally separated now since 2000, and have an adult daughter, Nicole. I also have a physically challenged (Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy) adult son, Chris, who lives with his Mom in San Ramon, CA. However, he passed on near Halloween of 2009. I currently live in Antioch, CA. I am currently enjoying retirement and all it has to offer, doing what I want when I want. I have had since birth, a nerve hearing loss in both ears. I have worn hearing aids since college. I was also diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes when I was 29. My swimming has helped keep the disease under control for many years. I lost the sight in my right eye in 1999. In 1999, I also had a triple heart bypass surgery. This year, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (same disease as Michael J Fox and Muhammad Ali) .. I still do OK ... I have my good and bad days like anyone else. I try to keep a positive spirit ... that helps a lot. I lived in Barron Park (Palo Alto) from 1945 to 1967, except 1963 to 1966 when I lived in San José going to San José State. I actually lived in Palo Alto 1967 to 1972. I moved to Santa Clara in 1972 and moved to Columbia, Maryland in 1973. I moved back to San José in 1980. I moved from San José to San Ramon in 1984. I moved to Martinez in 2000 and my last stop was to Antioch in 2004. I still live in Antioch presently. Schools I was promoted from Barron Park Elementary School to Wilbur Junior High School in June, 1955. I was in the first class to go all the way through Barron Park from September 1948, when it opened, to June 1955. I graduated from Wilbur Junior High School in June 1958 and started Cubberley Senior High School in September 1958 and graduated in June, 1961. I really enjoyed my high school years at Cubberley. I was Captain of the swim team, member of the Projection Club, Crew Lead of the Noon Movie Crew and on KCHS. I enjoyed playing jazz on my noon radio show during my senior year. I was also was a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the California Scholastic Society. Besides my activities at school, I was also teaching physically challenged kids and adults how to swim for Wedde Handiswimmers, which eventually became part of the CAR on Middlefield Road, which is now Abilities United. I worked with Betty Wright who was my neighbor in Barron Park o...Expand for more
n Chimalus Dr. All my activites were very enjoyable and a lot of fun. I also enjoyed going to sock hops and dances as I learned how to dance when I was in grade school and enjoyed taking the ladies to the dances and having a great time. College I went to San José State College, now known as San José State University, in San José. I changed my major once, from Math to Accounting and I worked to put myself through. My first car was a 1959 Hillman Minx in college. I was on the swim team all four years at SJSC. In 1963 our swim team won the California State College swim championship at L.A. State college. My best moment was when I did my best time in the 200 Breastroke in a dual meet with the University of Oregon and came in second to help win the meet for SJSC by 1 point. My previous best time would have put me in third place when matched with the Oregon swimmers. I was also active during my Junior and Senior years in the Accounting honorary society, holding several office positions. I enjoyed working with other Accounting students and helping younger students in our Accounting labs with their homework. I worked a variety of jobs while going to school. They included working as a credit clerk for a credit reporting firm, working as a payroll clerk for the Army reserves at Fort Ord, CA, working as an Assistant in a Public Accountant office during the income tax season, and working as an auditor trainee for the County of Santa Clara under the work study program. I learned lots from the jobs I had which helped me determine which Accounting field to work. Workplace After graduating from SJSC, I started work in Finance for Chevron Chemical in San Francisco in 1967. I worked a couple of clerk positions before moving up to a supervisoral position in Inventory and Cost Accounting. In 1970, for two years I worked in Oronite Additives Division as an Administrative Analyst, preparing forecasts and analyzing Division expenses. In early 1973, I was transferred to Vectra Corporation in Odenton, Maryland, where I worked 8 years as a Supervisor of Inventory and Cost Accounting for our Fibers Division. In 1980, I was transferred back to San Francisco to work for the Ortho Consumer Products Division as a Operations Analyst, preparing forecasts and analyzing expenses like I did for the Oronite Division. In 1993, Chevron sold the Ortho Consumer Products Divison to the Solaris Group of Monsanto. I retired due to health challenges in 1996. Military Contrary to the options listed under Military Q&A, I did NOT serve in the Armed Forces. I was classified 1Y at my Army draft physical due to my dual ear nerve hearing loss.
