Jay's Story
Workplace
Before joining the Navy in 1972, I worked at a number of fast food places around Trotwood. After the Navy (1976) I worked on the assembly line at Frigidaire until the plant closed in 1979. After Frigidaire I went to Shopsmith located in Vandalia. I first worked in Customer Service, then became a corporate trainer. In 1982 I moved from Dayton to Atlanta to work in one of the now defunct Shopsmith Woodworking Centers. I was a woodworking instructor for the first six years, and the store manager the last eight years. When Shopsmith closed all of their stores in 1994 I had a short stint as woodworking instructor for a locally owned tool store, then I moved to ...Expand for more
the company where I am presently employed. I started working for Carolina Handling (Carolina Handling sells and services electric fork lifts)in November 1994 as a service co-ordinator.
Military
I joined the Navy in September 1972. I went to boot camp at Great Lakes, IL. I was stationed on the USS Bigelow DD942, a destroyer based in Mayport, FL. I made two cruises to south Europe in 1974, and then again in 1975. I considered making a career of the Navy for about 10 minutes one afternoon. I never did get over being sea sick so that ended that idea. I did get to see a lot of interesting things and places; but after four years I had enough and returned to Trotwood.
