Jay's Story

After graduation, I went to Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. While there it was renamed University of Missouri at Rolla. Now it is Missouri University of Science and Technology. I had a small scholarship but had to work to earn tuition. i started on the Co-operative Education Program with NASA working on the Space Program. I moved 14 times between Rolla and Huntsville, Alabama to work at Marshall Space Flight Center where I met Werner von Braun and many other German Rocket pioneers. I finished my Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering - Aerospace in 4 years and 1 Summer Session despite all the moving. (The course was expected to take at least 5 full years). While working for NASA after graduation, I got involved in Bio-medical Engineering. I took classes at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. On a few occasions, I was asked to teach the classes in which I was enrolled. My first job was the testing and development of the F-1 rocket engine for the Saturn V booster. I, later, became the S-II stage manager which used the J-2 engines as well as the S-IVB. I was on a monitoring st...Expand for more
ation for Apollo 13 and saw the first indications of the explosion of the helium bottles. Later I was involved in the early stages of the self measuring sphygmomanometer (blood pressure thingy) that is now in all offices. I was helping a friend with his large boat at Lake Guntersville one day. A fisherman pulled up in the next slip. I helped him land his boat and unload it. The fisherman turned out to be Werner von Braun! As part of the job at NASA I was assigned to give tours of the test facilities. One day I boarded a bus full of Chemistry Instructors. I spied a familiar face in the back. Mr. Headlee was there!!! He did not recognize me until I started talking about my High School Chemistry teacher. He perked up as he started to recognize the details. He became the star of the bus when I called him forward and thanked him for his inspiration. I was married for 7 years but philosophical differences caused a split. She is high up in Scientology now... I am retired to work on my garden which is growing well. I have the advantage of a growing season that is twice most and three times some.
