Life This was the Bio that I had in my retirement program in August 2004 Commander Joseph J. Lipp III Unites States Navy Commander Lipp, a native of Westport, Connecticut enlisted in 1977 as a Machinist Mate and attended nuclear power training at Orlando, Florida and Ballston Spa, New York. He served as an instructor until August 1981, when he was selected for a Naval Reserve Officer Training Candidate Scholarship. He graduated from the State University of New York in 1985, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering. After completion of training at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, he reported to the USS Swordfish (SSN-579) in October of 1985 where he served as Assistant Weapons Officer and Weapons Officer. USS Swordfish completed a western Pacific deployment, and preparations for decommissioning. Commander Lipp, subsequently, attended officer nuclear power training in Orlando, Florida and Windsor, Connecticut. In September of 1998, he reported to the USS Augusta (SSN-710) and served as the Chemistry and Radiological Assistant, Main Propulsion Assistant, Damage Control Assistant and Combat Systems Officer. USS Augusta completed several northern deployments, sonar systems testing and under ice operations.
