Jay's Story
Life
I have been married for 25 years as of tomorrow 5/8/07 and have
2 kids. A son Mark 22 and daughter Jaycee 27 who has 2 kids
making me grandpa. One is her daughter Jordan age 8 and new son
Gavin age 1.
I have been a commercial union plumber for the last 25 years and been a lead foreman for about 19 of those. I love my job or lets
just say I did love it, but as with almost everything, the novelty
has worn off a bit but I still enjoy looking back at what I have
helped to build. I was hoping to be able to do the remodel of
Stadium recently, but the company I work for didn't get the job.
I have worked on Northeast Tacoma Elementary School when it
got remodeled a few years ago. I also ran a hospital job next to
Mary Bridge called the Frank S. Baker building, some work at
Tacoma General, St. Joseph's, Good Sam Rogers High School Pool,
The Seattle Opera House(McCaw Hall), Amgen etc. Actually, after
25 years the list is pretty large, but it's neat to drive around and
see all of it.
I served in the Navy right after high school and made two tours
to Viet Nam.
I had a few jobs after that and got into auto mechanics and
worked at Pete Lovely Volks Wagon in Fife before getting into
plumbing.
I had also gone to Bate Voc Tech and took radio broadcasting
for 2 years. I got offered a job at KAGT in Anecortes but the pay
wasn't enough to move there so I let my license lapse. I wonder
where I would be now if I had stayed with it. It is a tough way
to make a living.
I studied martial arts for 13 years and have my own school in
my back yard that I built in 1995. I have since had to stop training
due to a back injury that has me partially disabled according to
L&I, but it does stop me from doing the training I need to continue
with my school at the level that I am. I reached 4th degree black
in 1994 and I miss training so much. The people and the life style
is so hard to discribe to people not in the martial a...Expand for more
rts. It is not
about fighting at all, and my instructor and the students are truely
my extrended family. They helped me build my school as I had
helped my instructor and there is nothing that I wouldn't do for them.
However, not training has allowed me to stay home at night and
spend time with my kids and family. It was hard to train 3 to 4 times
a week from 7:00pm to about 11:00pm and go to work. By friday
I was dead, but it felt so good.
I now ride motorcycles. I had crashed one on the freeway doing
100mph in the early 80's, and it took 18 years to get on another
one. I bought my first Harley in 2002 and then another one in 2006.
I ride all of the time and am a member of Tacoma Hog, which has
about 1200 members and we do all kinds of charity rides that are
just a blast. You wouldn't think of bikers that way, but they
really do alot of good. We have done rides for Children Hospital,
gone to the Orting soldiers home to help them fish in a derby,
delivered christmas presents to a homeless shelter for battered
women. This year we took 85 easter baskets to St. Anns church
and sat there while the kids opened them. Sometimes you'll catch
one or two of us with a tear or two. The kids are great. We did
a ride to Olympia for a Toy Run a couple of years ago and there
were 6800 bikes. You don't hear about it much on the news. Just
a bunch of bikers you know, but hey, it's all good and it's for the
kids anyway. Would be nice to improve the image of a bikers though.
I have started to take my grandaughter with me and she even
helped with the easter baskets this year. She's a good kid and soon
I'll have to decide how to take turns with my grandson too.
That's about the major stuff going on in my life. The kids are
grown up and gone, they don't listen to me much anyway, not like
I used to listen either. Pay backs! My son just got married, contrary
to what I said, so I'm not saying anything about them having kids.
