Jay's Story
Life
I didn't end up too far away - just a little farther north in Mukilteo, where we've lived since 1980.
After high school, I went to college for a couple of years, then enlisted in the Army in 1969. I went to Viet Nam in July of 1970 for a year where I was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. When I returned I was stationed at Ft Lewis until my enlistment was up in March of 1972.
I got married that November. Still married to the same lady.
I've got one daughter, who graduated from Kamiak High with honors in the 1st class of this millennium; she was also a cheerleader during her senior year. She's received her associate degree from Cascadia CC and is an alum of the U of Washington class of 2006.
I worked for the Corps of Engineers from 1978 to 1982 then transferred to the Federal Aviation Administration where I worked from January 1982 until December 2006 when I retired.
In 2007 I started doing volunteer service at the Future of Flight and Boeing Tour Center located at Paine Field in Everett. It's interesting and fun meeting people from all over the World and talking about aviation with them.
In February 2008 we made a trip to Singapore, courtesy of my wife's company, APL/NOL, to celebrate her 35 years of service to the company.
In 2011 we bought our first RV, a 24' JayFlight travel trailer that I tried towing with a Dodge Ram2500 w/5.7L Hemi. After doing that for the first year, I decided I needed something a little more capable of towing so I traded the Dodge Ram in for a new 2012 Ram2500, 4x4 crew cab w/Cummins turbo diesel. Towing with a diesel makes a huge difference, with more than twice the torque I can maintain freeway speed on nearly all upgrades.
We've taken it down to the Oregon Coast on a number of occasions, over to Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho, Olympic Peninsula, and the Cascades.
In 2016 we traded the JayFlight in for an Open Range 2410RL with a better, more livable interior layout.
This year my daughter got engaged to a great guy. They'll be getting hitched in October at the Seattle Golf Club.
My daughter's wedding was an outstanding success. It came off beautifully. About 100 people attended and our friend, a retired minister for First Presbyterian in Everett, officiated. It was really great, but I'm certainly ...Expand for more
glad it's over. One and done.
Fall of 2019 we started looking to move into a new home, a rambler so it's all on one level and with a little more property. We looked at existing and new construction from Camano Island to Monroe. In November we finally settled on new construction in the Lake Stevens/Granite Falls area, and I mean really new as it had not been built yet. We chose a building site of slightly over one level acre for which the building plans had already been submitted by the builder. In late January/early February ground was broken and foundation work started. Work progressed steadily until Jay Inslee called a moratorium on all "unnecessary construction." Now it sits with the roof on, windows and ext doors installed, siding partially installed, interior framing mostly complete, and electrical and plumbing rough-ins were partially done. We had planned on moving in around the end of May or early June. Now it's all up in the air until the gov allows residential construction to restart or the courts overrule Inslee.
Construction resumed after a hiatus of about 6 weeks or so, but it effectively delayed the completion for nearly the entire summer.
We are now officially residents of Lake Stevens after 40 years to the month in Mukilteo. It's quite a change living in what has been a predominantly rural locale with large lots, forest and farmland in the nearby surroundings. It's more relaxed and peaceful by not having a large airport nearby and competing with Boeing traffic whenever you wish to go somewhere after 1:30 in the afternoon or having to endure aircraft noise, although watching the vintage aircraft during the special events at Paine Field in the summertime was always a treat.
The really big event for 2020 was that I became a grandfather when my daughter, Erin, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Ava Augusta, in July. That is one of the happiest events of my life.
Another big event is going to happen. Being a grandfather has been one of the best things to happen to me. The last 2+ years watching little Ava grow and develop has been a real joy in my life... she calls me "Papa."
On March 14, 2023, I again became a grandfather. This time my daughter had TWINS, Niko Franklin and Kyra Ann! Another momentous occasion bringing great joy.
