Jayne's Story

I always wanted to be a journalist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. I sometimes write on consignment and have been published in the local paper. I wrote for Edmond Life & Leisure, a weekly publication in their inaugural year, and then retired to play more golf. I never enjoyed the deadlines. I am formulating ideas for a novel, but who knows if that'll ever happen? Best way to relax is a vigorous workout or a day at the golf course. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have coffee, top down on the car, and patience to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My dad is my hero. He inspired hard work, saving, forthrightness and honesty. I've lived in Norman, Oklahoma City, Colorado and Edmond, OK. Went to school at OU, finishing with B.A. in Journalism. Worked part time for an insurance agency, then full-time for state's largest ad agency, Ackerman & McQueen. I detest reality TV. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my bathroom and add on a huge bathroom and closet. My dream home would be this one, with a bigger bathroom and tub. I love bubble baths and if I have a nice glass of Cabernet, I can soak in there for a long while. Parenting two boys has been a blast. I don't know what to do with girls, which you'd think I'd have a little clue about, since I am one. Son, Tyler, was born in 1983 and works in the HR department at OG&E in OKC. He obtained a business degree from UCO last July. He's a bachelor. Son, Tanner, just turned 22 (born in 1987)and is working on a professional golf management degree at UCO. That's right up his alley, as he's a scratch golfer who played at Deer Creek during the school's first trip to State in its history. He's also a bachelor. Will I EVER have daughters-in-law? I hope so. What have they taught me? Hmm. That's a tough one. Mostly how to cover up the gray hairs they've given me, I suppose. Teacher I'd most like to see again? That's another toughie. I suppose it would be a toss-up between Joe Woodruff and Opal Irene Smith. Both encouraged my love of writing and drama. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to my church, then spend the rest on a vacation home, travel and investments. Yes, I did live in a dorm my freshman year. It was a blast. I wouldn't trade those college years for anything -- best time of my life. And yes, I was in Delta Delta Delta sorority, which I cherish. I keep in very close contact with about a dozen of my "sisters" and we meet every other year somewhere like Galveston or Dallas to eat, ...Expand for more
drink and be merry. They truly ARE my sisters. To be truly happy, I can't imagine changing much in my life. I've been married to Gary for almost 35 years, and while life's had its ups-and-downs, as every life does, the ups outweigh the downs. However, to be truly, truly content, I would love to spend every summer in Colorado. I hate to sweat. My current age is 56. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be decaying . I was so completely self absorbed. My first crush? He knows who he is. The best kiss I've ever had (still). My best friend would tell you I'm introspective, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as stubborn. Dress? I prefer casual chic -- simple, black & white. But, I also have purple toenails right now, so like a little funky stuff, just enough to be different but not to scream, "look at me." No tattoos, though. Nasty. I share my home with Gary, which I find to be enjoyable, as he's a man who likes to cook dinner sometimes. Alright!. Yeah, got lots of trophies, although I think most of them are in the attic. Those are pretty tacky I think -- sort of like stuffed and mounted fish and game. Who needs it? But, I'm a fairly decent golfer and have brought home my share of local and state awards. In 10 years, I hope to be a grandmother. I'm going to get there by praying for the perfect women to love and cherish my sons. My best friend is Cindy W., who lives here in Edmond. We met at the Tri-Delt house in Norman in 1971 and have been friends ever since. She knows me inside and out, as I've allowed few to do. She's got one of the most tender hearts of anyone I've ever known and I find her affinity for animals and people endearing. Surprise for people at a high school reunion? Well, that's probably a moot point, as I'm not sure we'll ever have another class reunion, but people would be most surprised to see that my hair has gone from brunette to blond (that's strictly to blend in the gray) and I keep it short. I tried letting my hair grow out long again a few years ago and hated it. It was hot, and hard to take care of. My first job was at The State Bank of Rocky, where I got paid very little to post checks by hand. What I remember most about it is the old check posting machine (a bonafide antique). Now, the bank building isn't even standing. Sad... A childhood memory? Summer nights at the Farrand's house, eating Jane's famous potato salad, catching lightning bugs, playing Kick the Can, and stargazing. Doesn't get any better than that -- warm summer nights in the old home town.
