Jean's Story

Wow, there's a lot of years since 1970 to try to summarize in this space but here's some highlights. My family left Tampa between my Junior and Senior years to return to my Dad's hometown of Hayfield, MN. Actually I was born there but we moved away when I was a child so I had few memories of MN. So I actually graduated from Hayfield HS, not Robinson. Since I mostly grew up in Tampa and spent most of my high school years at RHS, I consider Robinson to be my "co" Alma Mater along with Hayfield HS where I actually graduated. After high school I had a few minor jobs but then I decided to join the Navy which I did in 1974. I was a Cryptologic Technician and had a security clearance. My first duty station was Guam where I met and married my husband John. Our wedding was delayed by a major typhoon but we managed to get married a few days later...that's a story all by itself. After a couple years in Guam I was assigned to Taiwan for a couple years and after that I was stationed at the NSA at Ft. Meade, MD. There we bought our first home and put down roots. After that tour I had a some time left on my enlistment so I was sent to Okinawa for 18 months. After that tour I got out of the Navy having served a total of 9 years. We continued to live in Maryland and spent a total of 13 years there. After the Navy I used the GI Bill to get a BS in Computer Science at UMBC in Maryland and then I got a job as a government employee at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. I was a UNIX system administrator in the Engineering and Weapons (academic) departm...Expand for more
ent. I really enjoyed working at USNA but it turned out I couldn't stay. My husband was working for LexisNexis in DC at that time and his company transferred him to their headquarters in Dayton, Ohio, so we moved to Ohio in 1993. I took a job with LexisNexis when we moved here and I've been there almost 17 years now. At LexisNexis I started out as a UNIX system administrator and then I became a storage specialist. My current job involves planning and coordinating computer system installations. I decided to go back to school in 1996 and for two years I continued to work full time (and be on-call with a pager) while attending school full time to get an MA in Management. That was intense! My life was very hectic then but it was very satisfying and worth it in the end. John and I have been married since 1976. We don't have kids (by design) and we like to travel. We have two cats for pets and we enjoy their antics and their companionship. Retirement is still a few years away and I look forward to having more time for hobbies but in the meantime I have a job I love and I'm grateful for that. A lot of folks here in SW Ohio have lost their jobs so I'm aware of how lucky I am. I wasn't a mover and shaker in high school and back then I could never have imagined the way my life has turned out. I love my husband, my family, my friends, my coworkers, my job, my kitties. There have been some sorrows but it's turned out pretty well and I'm happy. My life has been pretty interesting so far and I hope it continues that way for quite a while.
