Jeanette's Story

Life My linear journey to Montana: After graduating from NHS I attended nursing college at the U of MD in Baltimore. The highlight of my college years was attending Woodstock in '69 and spending a summer in Haight/Ashbury in '70. After graduating in ’71, I hitched a ride with a classmate who was headed back to SF. While living in the Bay area for 6 years I met and married Brian Priest. He was a pediatric intern at the time. We met at Children’s Hospital in Oakland over starting IV’s on preemies. Both of us loved to backpack in the mountains so decided to move to Montana and work for the Indian Health Service in Browning. Browning is conveniently located 10 miles from Glacier National Park. We spent 6 years hiking one end to the other until I got too spooked about the potential of close encounters with grizzlies. We moved to Livingston (early 1980’s) located in south central MT about 50 miles N of Yellowstone Park. Here I raised horses and one child, Nate, who is now 22 years old (as of '06). I got into competing with horses in jumping, dressage, and horse trials. I eventually switched to showing reining horses when I started considering jumping a too high risk sport (think Christopher Reeves, R.I.P.). Perspective does change with age and accompanying aches and pains. However, very recently, I sold my last competition horse. I am horseless, but now have time to travel and pursue new hobbies. ile I am working in nursing in various roles for the past 25 years: community health, home health, hospice, diabetes education, quality improvement, management, nursing education (associate professor at MSUN). I was always in pursuit of the perfect nursing day job with no weekend or night call. To help in this endeavor I returned to school in '95 to get a Master’s degree from Montana State University in Bozeman. Brian sold his pediatric practice in '00 and we moved to Lewistown, MT (central part of the state). We both made some career changes. Brian is working exclusively as an ER physician. I am managing a Diabetes Education Program (no night call!). Plus, Nate, who recently graduated from college, is now married and independently making his way in the world as a film editor. Since giving up horses, I have taken up drums, and playing jazz/rock /country in various bands. . I also took up racewalking competitively because I have a hard time sitting still and it helps keep my weight in check. Gave that up a few years ago when my knees started rebelling. Both my parents were living in Leisure World in Silver Spring, Md, but just moved to Lewistown to be close to family. My dad passed in 2014 and mom celebrated 101 in 2018. I am going to miss my MD pilgrimages 2-3 times a year, and will very much miss visiting with some of my old high school friends. So that's my abbreviated story - Life is still good!
