Jeanette's Story

I've been retired since August 2012 and feel like I've had a wonderful yet stressful life ( on occasion ) but haven't we all? Now I am enjoying a carefree yet satisfying life as a retiree. After leaving Okemos I graduated from Albion College in 1966 then received my master's degree in Education (Early Childhood leadership and advocacy) in 1994. We married a week after college graduation and move to I Boston immediately and I worked at Children's Hospital Medical center and Boston University while my husband attended seminary at BU. We immediately had two sons born 16 months apart so life was busy and we enjoyed exploring beautiful New England. We moved to Northern Illinois in 1976 and lived in Freeport, Illinois where I worked for Senior Nutrition Services running their programs in several counties. Then moved to Markham IL (8 miles from the Indiana border but only 20 miles from Chicago). My husband was a Methodist minister and life as a minister's wive was not easy. I did enjoy helping to run the youth group, making paraments and banners as well as singing in the choir. But the night meetings and busy weekends made family life difficult and we were divorced in 1985. I worked for the Community Mennonite Early Learning Center while I was in Markham. While there we built a child care of 60 children to an award winning child care for 200 children - 74 were infants/toddlers. Many of the children were from teenage parents that we worked with and welcomed into the center gi...Expand for more
ving them support and building their self esteem. I loved the experience of working with staff and families. I enjoyed single life for 15 years and my career during that period of my life. My boys moved to Boise Idaho after they graduated from college then I followed them four years later. I worked for Easter Seals for nearly 10 years running their Children's Services programs - working with their child care center directors and an autism program in a four state area. I was able to travel in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah often. I finished my career at BSU Children's Center as an assistant director. We have a mini-farm which keeps us busy. We have a very playful cow, silly, loving goats, chickens and two stupid turkeys as well as a dog and 2 cats. We enjoy seeing the 4 grandchildren frequently - 15, 11, 2 and a baby born last Dec. I've been married to my husband twice - the first time for 20 years and we remarried in 2000 after we both moved to Idaho. We still have lots in common and are enjoying our life together enjoying our kids and grandkids (they both live about 3 miles from us). Idaho is a fun place to live with lots of outdoor activities: hiking, skiing, rafting, fishing and hunting. The climate is great - high desert so we have a hot July but really pleasant temperatures the rest of the year. We do have snow usually in January and a great ski area only 45 miles away. So it's a great retiree community - lots to do, good people and great climate.
