Jeanne's Story

Life Well, I thought life began when I became a mother, and it did change completely. But when I started college at 37, life started all over. I was completely entranced with the courses I was taking, making studying no problem. I loved the whole scene, books, classes, exams, professors!!! I graduated DBCC with an AA and an AS with Honors and won the Spanish Award. Then at UCF, I completed my English degree Summa Cum Laude, Sigma Tau Delta, in 1 1/2 years. Then after taking the dramatic GRE's and getting a 1210, I was entered into the Univ. of South Florida's Graduate Program for Special Education, for which the university is specially known. I figured my bachelor's degree was for special interest, but my graduate degree had to lead to employment, after all I had a kid and I was a single mom. So, one year full time into the graduate program, I got hired by an elementary school to teach the emotionally disturbed, a rather violent group, but I learned to love them almost immediately. All this time, my son was determined gifted, put into the Mu Alpha Meta program for math, put into the IB program for high school, and finally I completed my graduate degree with honors, taking my time, one course a semester. So, I did what I never thought I could do, well I never thought I could do any college at all, but I did my Bachelor's degree with Highest Honors, and my Graduate Degree with Honors, the first in my family to achieve graduate school. It was just persistance and love for learning. I still have that, but I have to work now to pay off those de...Expand for more
grees, and live in the meantime. I don't suppose many of my classmates thought I'd get to college, never mind make it in college. Well, when I was in high school, I didn't think so either. But, somewhere you get the courage to try against your mightiest fears of failure, and somehow you find out you can succeed. My students think I'm a terrific teacher, and miss me when I am even one day out. I write the curriculum for our group for the whole year, and have lucklily had it approved each time. It's been an adventure, a real adventure, I love working with those who are challenged with disabilities. It's my lifelong devotion. If I can make 30 people happy with what I do, then darn I'll be doing it. Well, that's what makes me happy, making other people happy. And I do it so well. I get accolades for it, but the best thing I get is the smiles and hugs from students for the little programs I have put into place to recognize their efforts, give them some pizzaz, and make their weekend a little more exciting. It's my gift to them. I want to do it,so I do it. Others don't consider it a big deal, but when you know how little they have to look forward to, it really is a big deal. Well, let me end by saying, I'm soooooo very lucky to have a job I can love and a job that can love me. That's really special. Well, I won't make a million dollars, but that's a pretty mute point. I wish you all the same happiness I get from my job, and the same pride and happiness I get from my son, for your futures. It's Little Indian pride. And that's the best we've got.
