Jeannie's Story

Here goes my attempt to pack a few highlights of the past 40 years into a paragraph or two or three or... I graduated from ISU and taught at a Junior High School in Marion, IN. I lasted one miserable year - I swore that I would never walk into another school for the rest of my life. I moved to the DC area and worked as a draftsman for a company that installed fire alarm and sound systems in all of the gov. buildings. I met a man that I married in 1977. We moved back to Terre Haute, I worked for Hamilton Center as a preschool teacher (never say never) for a couple of years and then became the director of the program for another 8 years. During this time I earned a Masters Degree from ISU. We moved to New Mexico in 1987 and I worked at a Hospital and Training School for one year...big mistake. I then started teaching in the public schools - again - I then became a coordinator for Special Education. I went back to school - again - at the University of NM and received an Ed.S. Degree in Educational Administration in 1991. I have been a principal for 12 years. I am presently at an elementary K-6 school with 500 + - students. My school is located in the desert away from everything but cactus, rattle snakes and scorpions. The school has 100% poverty and is approximately 90% Hispanic. Most of the st...Expand for more
udents are from Mexico - many illegally. We have many gang family and drug dealers children. Needless to say there is never a dull moment. Since I have lived in NM I was a member of the Valencia County Sheriffs Posse for 2 years - I rode in parades doing fancy moves with my horse, wearing a badge and a gun. I bet you thought Annie Oakley was the bad girl of the west - Ha! I also did "team penning" and cattle roundups for a while. I had a serious horse wreck in 1989 or 1990 - can't remember when exactly but they sent the "dog catcher" to rescue a crazy woman wondering around in the middle of the road. I didn't know who I was or anything else for a week or two but I recovered. I was divorced in 1997 and had to move from our little ranch and get rid of my donkey "Buckwheat", potbellied pig, one horse and dogs, my dad passed away in 2003 and my mom is 87 and still getting into trouble. In the summer of 2005 I attended the University of Granada in Spain. I still can't speak Spanish... I reallllly want to retire but I do not have enough years in NM. So we will see how many more years I can last - maybe one?? I am looking forward to our next reunion - until then, I do enjoy the bio's of our classmates. Thank you for getting this started. Here's a BIG HELLO to everyone in the class of "1968"!
